Monday, January 1, 1951
Ray worked today. I called Cousin Willis. Pat went to a show. I wrote a “Thank You” note to Loyal Daughters and letters to Mary Ellen and Warren & Ginny and Carol. L.R. wrote to Carol, too. Package came from Ken & Anne – a book for L.R., bridge set for me, and what looks like an Eversharp pencil for M.E. (Turned out to be a Girl Scout pen.)
Tuesday, January 2, 1951
L.R. has a bad cold so didn’t go to school. Wrote a letter to Ken & Anne. Shampooed and set L.R.’s hair, washed out some things, and baked a butterscotch pie. Ray came for L.R. at 4:20 p.m. and took her to get her glasses. They then went to hospital to see Mom.

L.R. went back to school. I called Jenny Miller, Elsie and Berdine. Berdine stopped in for a few minutes in aft. Gus, Russell and Wilna got home from La. last night.

Ray went to choir rehearsal. Aunt Helen came home from California. Wrote letters to Ken, and Pat and L.R. wrote to M. Kane. Talked to M. Troy over phone. Jim called this noon. They now have a phone. Caryl is in Danville & will be back tomorrow.

Ray home today. Wrote letter to Marian Gilroy. Received letter from Alice. Ray took laundry and went to Fred Hignite’s for a few minutes in eve. Aunt Helen here in eve.

Ray home today. L.R. and Ray went to Orpheum tonight to see Bing Crosby in “Mr. Music.”

Ray went to St. Louis to see M.E. Children didn’t go to S.S. Lorene came in aft. Ray got home around 5:30. We had supper and listened to radio.

Berdine here in aft. and washed my hair. Minnie called last night about Mom’s money. Pat went to Scouts. Wrote letter to Alice. Ray worked on L.R.’s doll buggy. Pat received letter from Mother D., Ray and I from M.E.

Wrote letter to Mary Ellen. Mary Taylor called and Dr. Hill. I called Aunt Helen and Bob. Ray home at noon to get bank book. L.R. went to Brownie meeting. Ray went to bean supper and then to Scattergood’s for quartet rehearsal. He got home about 11:30 p.m. Pat came after that. Altered Ray’s good pants – 2 inches more at waist. He’s gained 38 pounds.

Finished Lorene’s potholder (mitten). Cousin Willis called about elevator. Ray worked today. Tonight he wrote a letter to Uncle Walter.

Hagler called today in car and Ray went away with him at 10 a.m. and got home at 3 p.m. Talked to Bob over phone about Mom going to nursing home. L.R. went to birthday party for Martha Skibitski at 2:30 p.m. and will stay for supper. She went to show in eve. with Yocoms.

Ray and children went to S.S. He stayed for church and Pat and L.R. came home after S.S. with VanMeters. Ray sang at Presbyterian Church in Petersburg with quartet in eve. Aunt Helen came here. Doc and Bob were out in aft. after they moved Mom to Huskey Nursing Home, 401 W. Capitol.

Received letter from Mother D. and wrote her, Mary Ellen, and Aunt Fannie. Cousin Willis gave Ray tickets for Gene Autry show at Armory on January 24. Ray and L.R. went to nursing home to see Mom. Bob went too.

Minnie called about nightgowns for Mom. Aunt Helen went to see her in aft. and Doc & Minnie in eve. Ray fixed Pat’s bike and L.R.’s buggy. Called W.J.S. in a.m. to thank him for tickets.

Cut out stripe material for self and basted dress. Berdine went to see Mom today. Mrs. Neale called Ray last night re party for M.E. Ray and children took down Xmas tree.

Berdine stopped in this a.m. Mr. Bowen came for elevator lift plans. Bob sent him. Ray went to choir rehearsal. Charles Sutton operated on legs today. Got along fine.

Ray took car over to garage and washed it. Mr. Wenger (spastic) came over with Pat before Ray left and left with Ray to go to Concordia Gym.

Ray cleaned girls’ room. Mr. Baumann brought elevator plans – rejected the job. Called Bob in aft. Called Lee and he quoted $35.00 for foundation. Ray got groceries in aft. and went to Jim’s in eve. to pick up Pat and brought quart of ice cream home.

Ray and L.R. went to S.S. and church. Pat stayed home and helped me. He did very well. Pauline Lynn came in aft. and rehearsed Ray’s solo for Tuesday night. Ray went to church and Aunt Helen stayed with me. Elsie went to see Mother. Pat went to a show in afternoon.

Pat went to Scout meeting. Lorene and Katie came out. They’d been to see Mother. Bob was there, too. I told Bob that elevator was out. Aunt Helen saw Mom in aft.

Ray went to bean supper and sang his solo, “Will There Be Any Stars In My Crown.” Came out fine! He stopped in to see Mom.

Ray took Pat, L.R. and Maureen to Gene Autry show. Poor seats but children had a good time. Aunt Helen stayed with me. She saw Mother in afternoon.

Berdine went to see Mom this afternoon. Received letter from Mother D. and I sent one to her. Talked to Margaret Troy on phone. Ray went to choir rehearsal.

Children home today as last of semester. Sent card to Mary Taylor. Ray had to go to plant at 6:30 and got home about 9 o’clock. Aunt Helen went to see Mother this p.m. Received letter from Mother D.

Mrs. Bommarito had a baby girl, Patricia Rose, born at 7 a.m., Mom’s birthday. Mr. Howard came to see about ramps. Mary Taylor called to thank me for card. Lorene went to see Mom. L.R. went to Pantheon with Maureen, Bobby and Stevie. Ray left at 2 p.m. and got home at 1:30 a.m. He got a check for back pay.

We all overslept so skipped S.S. and church. Refrigerator on the blink so Mr. Meador came and fixed it, $6.00. Pat went to a show in aft. All home in evening.

Received letter from Olwen Sperry. Ray had to go to church. Charles Sutton called to say Carol has left California and is on her way home. W.J.S. got back from California today.

Received letters from M.E. and Mother D. Ironed unstarched pieces and washed socks, etc. I wrote to M.E. and Aunt Georgia. Valentines and dress for L.R. came from Spiegel’s. Aunt Helen here in evening. Carol got home today. Ray had brakes on car fixed at Campbell’s today.

L.R. took first piano lesson from Pauline Lynn. Ray went to choir rehearsal. L.R. wrote letter to M.E. and I wrote Mother D. M.E. is supposed to have casts removed today.

Coldest in 15 years today – 15 below zero. Pat didn’t go to a show tonight so it must be cold. We listened to radio and Ray popped corn and served “Pepsi” with it.

Received letters from M.E. and Ken Sutton today. Ray got car heater repaired at Tuxhorn’s Garage this morning and left about 11:30 a.m. to get groceries. We ate supper at 6 p.m. and then listened to radio. Pat went to a show. Aunt Helen saw Mom today.

Received letter from Alice and Betty for Mother. Lumber came out from Barker-Lubin this a.m. for ramp. Package for M.E. came from Mother D. Ray went to church for supper and then left cards with members for building pledge. Aunt Helen here in evening.

Talked to Mrs. Hanson, Aunt Helen, Mrs. Godley, Elsie, Pauline Lynn, and Lorene this a.m. Jewel Tea man here in aft. Jane Scattergood called about [her daughter] Linda’s coat. Ray went to church for supper. Pat went to a show. Ray got home about 8 p.m.

Today is Pat’s 15th birthday. Scattergoods came and brought material & pattern for Linda’s coat. To celebrate Pat’s birthday we had sirloin steak, fried potatoes, tomato juice, ice cream and cake. He received $5.00 from Grandma & Grandpa Durst, $1.00 from Lorene, $1.00 from Aunt Helen, Bing Crosby record from L.R. and a pair of “Keds” from Ray and me. Ray went to choir rehearsal.

Cut out L. Scattergood’s coat. L.R. took her music lesson tonight at 5:30 as Pauline went to the DeCamera funeral yesterday aft. Berdine fixed my hair today. Jim received notice from Selective Service re draft. Ray took it to him this eve. and he has to leave February 19th, Caryl’s birthday. He took the dress I got her, too.

Ray home today. He fixed toilet in a.m. L.R. and Pat went to town with him in aft. Pat got shoes and L.R. a few Valentines. Pat got his electric popcorn popper. We used it the first time tonight. L.R. & M.E. received a letter from Grandma D. with $1.00 each for Valentine’s Day.

Ray went to S.S. & church. Pat & L.R. went to S.S. and came home on bus. Jim, Caryl and [her sister] Bonnie dropped in this evening but didn’t stay as John Lazar, wife and son were here. They brought potato chips, beer, peanuts and ice cream. Ray popped corn and children drank pop.

[Lincoln’s Birthday] Children home today. Melfrances and Jolynn came in aft. Mel brought birthday cards for me to send to class members, also a blouse and bag for L.R. Ray went to church to rehearse with quartet. L.R. finished writing Valentines. Mr. Howard put up ramp in back.

I planned on going to Berdine’s “Better Brush” demonstration but backed out at the last minute. Ray got paid today. Elvira stopped in for a little while with baby – she’s a doll.

Ray and children went to S.S. and he stayed for church. Pat and L.R. came home on bus. Ray served communion to shut-ins this p.m. Gus and Russell came and brought our evening meal. Aunt Helen, Charles and Carol came, too. Had a grand time.

Still working on L. Scattergood’s coat. Called Jane re buttons being too large. Jim left at 3:15 a.m. today. Caryl called at 3:30 to say Jim called long distance and was leaving St. Louis at 7 o’clock tonight for Kentucky and later for Florida. Today is Caryl’s birthday, too – 18 years old.

Margaret Troy had a baby boy, 10 a.m. today, 8 lbs. 11 oz., named Michael Quinn Troy. Mrs. Godley here in aft. W.J.S. in hospital for check-up and rest. He called in eve. Melfrances & Jolynn here in eve. and brought some things for L.R. and a blouse of Mel’s for me to finish for her. Received letters from Mother D. and Marian Gilroy.

Ray injured his leg at Filter Plant. Wes called and said they’re coming for weekend and would arrive at 10 p.m. Friday.

Ray quit work at 10 a.m. and went to see Dr. Lewis. He gave him a shot of penicillin and told him to keep an ice pack on ankle. Bob and Marge came out. Aunt Helen sent crutches and ice bag by Mr. Diller this evening. L.R. took music lesson.

Ray went to doctor at 11 a.m. and got another shot. Pat went to Moonlight Gardens to C.E. skating party at 10-12 midnight. Wes and Alice got here at 11:15 and L.R. ran out to car to tell them they were to stay at Aunt Helen’s.

Ray went to doctor at 11 a.m. for shot. Wes and Alice had supper here. They brought gifts to all of us. They left at 8 p.m. to go with Doc and Minnie.

Ray took Pat and Linda Rae to S.S. and he went to St. John’s for a shot. The Willsons stopped by for a few minutes. Pat went to C.E. and a show. Aunt Helen came.

Caryl called at 8:10 a.m. to say she’d just received a call from Jim and he is in service for sure. She’s coming here Thursday eve. to live. Ray went to doctor’s office for another shot. Wrote letter to Mother D. We had barbeques for supper. Ray got a haircut and took his watch to be repaired and (?).

Ray left at 8 a.m. for St. Louis. Berdine had lunch with me. She took girls’ and Grandma’s curtains to wash. I ironed girls’. Ray and M.E. got home about 3 p.m. Aunt Helen came for supper and got quart of ice cream. M.E.’s feet are in perfect shape! She opened her birthday and Xmas gifts after supper. Betty Hagler’s baby boy was born at 10 p.m., weight-9 lbs.

Sent letter to Ray’s mother and received one from her; also one from Aunt Ethel. Ray went to choir rehearsal. Charles and Carol came out. Ray went to doctor for shot. L.R. took music lesson. Mayme Lazar called Ray this a.m. to tell him Johnny [Lazar] found Don Hagler dead at 8 a.m. They were here this p.m.

I packed some of Mom’s things, getting ready for Caryl to move in. Ray went to funeral home tonight to see Don. Ray skipped the doctor today.

Ray went to funeral with Madden and came home with Lazars. Caryl was going to move in tonight but postponed it until tomorrow morning on account of rain and snow. L.R. went to Pantheon with Bobby Bommarito. I baked and iced a cake for M.E.’s party tomorrow. Ray got a shot in a.m.

Caryl and bedroom furniture arrived at 10:15 a.m. I made potato salad and lemon-lime cottage cheese-pineapple salad for family potluck tonight. Elsie, Otto, Wilna, Charles, Carol, Robbie, Bob, Marge, and Aunt Helen came. Caryl came about 5 p.m.

Caryl went to apartment but Underfanger truck came and left before she got there, so they’re coming back Wednesday to move rest of her furniture. L.R. went to Red Feather Bldg. tonight with Yocoms as Brownies have to perform there. Pat went to Scouts. Barbara Bailey and her mother here after school and brought M.E.’s books.

Caryl went to apartment at 8 a.m. and Underfanger called and said they couldn’t make it until 1 p.m. Ray got a shot. He went to a meeting at church. Wrote letter to Mother D. Mr. Taylor died today.

Mrs. Neale and the 7th graders brought M.E. an Easter basket filled with oranges, apples, bananas and candy. Ray went to doctor at 11 a.m. Caryl went to town in aft. She shampooed my hair in a.m. and Berdine pinned it up.

Ray went to doctor at 11 a.m. Marian Gilroy, Elsie, and Alan were here in a.m. Caryl pinned up M.E.’s hair and washed and pinned L.R.’s. Pat went to show in eve. Mr. Taylor was buried today.

Girls received cards and $1.00 each from Grandma D. Received an Easter lily from my secret pal. Ray got a basket for L.R. Quartet met here tonight. We served spice cake and coffee. Mr. Diller brought my pins and buttons for striped dress I made. Received Easter card and letter from Mother D. Ray got a new pair of oxfords.

Caryl went to doctor and then to Sears to pick up catalog. Ray picked her up there and brought her home. Berdine came in aft. Ray went to last church bean supper of this season. I worked on one of print pique dresses Jolynn gave L.R. Caryl got a black belt for it.

Ray worked from 4-12. Mailed letter to Grandma D. M.E. & L.R. wrote, too. Ray called Dr. Stocker about cold and he phoned prescription to Watts. I ordered dresses from M.W. for M.E. and L.R. to take place of those cancelled by Florida Fashions; also pocket book for L.R. and baby book for Caryl’s baby shower April 6.

Ray took L.R. and Maureen to amateur program at Ridgely School. Berdine stayed here until time to go for Cecil. Brownie troop won $2.00 for their puppet act. Sears called that baby book and L.R.’s pocket book are here. I worked on L.R.’s aqua sun dress.

Caryl went with Ray to cash her income tax refund check and get our groceries. L.R. stayed at Maureen’s for lunch. M.E. shampooed my hair and set it and did a good job also on hers. I pinned up Caryl’s after supper. Jim called long distance.

Ray went out for a little while to Election Headquarters. I’m still working on L.R.’s aqua sun dress. Mrs. Godley came over and brought some red material for appliqueing on L.R.’s dress.

Caryl went to doctor and then to her mother’s. Aunt Helen came and Harry Clements was with Mr. Diller when he came for her. Ray went to town to Election Headquarters. Cousin Willis was out and brought me 1 lb. box Martha Washington chocolates. I called Betty Hagler.

Caryl and M.E. went over to see Bommarito’s baby. Ray went to pay Watts and got home about 10:30 p.m. I called Magda Pieper but she was ill.

Caryl’s baby shower tonight, but I didn’t go as it rained hard. Ray and Pat home tonight. Enjoyed Ray being home. Caryl got a lot of lovely things.

Mom called me this afternoon. Jim called Caryl long distance twice tonight. Ray went to work at midnight. Carol Sutton called – she’s getting over a cold and wanted girls to come over but Ray wasn’t available to take them.

I woke up at 1:30 a.m. and had to go to bathroom. Caryl helped me. Jim came before I got back to bed at 2 a.m. Ray took girls to S.S. and dedication exercises at church and then to see Mom this afternoon. Jim had to leave at 1:20 p.m. I made some divinity and we listened to radio. Ray went to bed about 4 p.m.

Mrs. Watson, Bonnie & Barbara [Caryl’s mother & sisters] came out after supper. I sent letters to Alice, Marian G., and Mother D. Mary Ellen went back to school today. Her class gave her a Swiss music powder box. Wilna Sanders called and said she and Elsie have the flu.

L.R. didn’t go to school. Mr. Yocom pushed our car and got it started. Battery okay – needed new cable. Lorene called and said she got a radio for Mom. L.R. took music lesson and got back $2. Ray went to choir rehearsal. Caryl sent Pat for a case of pop and popped corn. Pauline Lynn has diamond ring from Deke [DeCamera].

Berdine fixed my hair as I thought I’d go to class meeting tonight. Caryl started having pains at 8 a.m. and went to hospital at 2 p.m. I decided not to go to class meeting.

Michael Raymond Pearce born at 10:40 a.m., 7 lbs. Aunt Helen was here to see Wes and family but got here too late. Alice, Wes, Alice Jean, Lloyd, Jimmy and Susan arrived at 11:30, stayed until 1:30 and went to see Mom. Ray took Caryl’s radio to her and then took girls to open house at Ridgely.

Ray went to doctor at 11 a.m. He picked up flannelette for jackets for Michael at Hanson’s. Also went to church to measure baptistry. Brought home chilli and tamales for lunch; also coffee cake. Pat brought home Eskimo pies for M.E., L.R. and me. Pretty nice! Ironed and shortened dress Lorene gave L.R. Caryl called and said she was coming home at 1 or 1:30 p.m. Michael circumcised today. Berdine and Mrs. Godley here in a.m. and Elvira and baby here in p.m. and Berdine came up to see Elvira.

L.R.’s Brownie Day. First time she presides as President. Michael’s cast put on this a.m. Ray went to get Caryl but had to wait to see Dr. Lewis, so they didn’t get here until around 4 p.m. Baby is darling! Lorene and Katie were here in eve. Called Cousin Willis and Charles Sutton. He said they decided Tom’s trouble was either diabetes or gall bladder.

Maybelle Taylor called and said Cleve is at St. John’s since April 16 with coronary occlusion. M.E. saw film on “menstruation” at Memorial Hospital this p.m.

[Daylight Savings Time begins] Ray went to 8 o’clock service, came home for girls at 9 and took them to S.S. and 10:30 a.m. service. Called Carol S. Troys came in aft. with their baby. He now weighs 11 lbs. and is a fine boy. Jim left on 4:45 bus. We had butter pecan ice cream for supper and pop and popcorn in evening.

Ray went to work at 4 p.m. Edith and Doris Willson came in aft. and Esther Farris brought girls home from church. Caryl received letter from Jim saying he would be home Sunday. Also she received first allotment check for Mike, $22.50 (hers $85). Jim gets additional $7.00 on account of Mike. Ray got lime in his left eye at filter plant and went to Dr. Patton and then Dr. Fleischli who ordered him to hospital for a couple days. Katie, Mrs. Hanson and Lorene were out and brought 2 glasses of jelly and sleeping tablets for me.

Mary, Joanne and Lorene) brought them. Bob brought the girls home in aft. Jim came about 6 p.m. Wrote note to Ray. Pat went to hospital in eve. Received jar of marmalade from Miami from Doc and Minnie. They’re home now and I called and thanked them.

Wes, Alice, Betty, Mike & Jane came about 10 a.m. Mrs. Lee brought a cake over. Aunt Helen came at 1:45 and took girls to funeral home. Bob got here at 1:55 p.m. and 2 men from Bisch’s at 2 p.m. I got to funeral home o.k. Mom looked beautiful and Laughlin gave a wonderful eulogy. I also went to cemetery and Aunt Helen came home with me and stayed til 7 p.m. Connie brought Mike home at 8 p.m. and her brother Dick and family came, too.

L.R. went to a fish fry at Lake Springfield with Yocoms at 3 p.m. and got home at 9:30 p.m. Aunt Helen here from 4 til 8 p.m. and brought ice cream roll. Jim left at 10 p.m. and Caryl went to see him leave. He was with same bunch of boys. Mailed cards of appreciation (58).

Ray went to quartet rehearsal tonight. We trimmed the Christmas tree tonight.

Berdine fixed my hair in aft. Ray’s cold and cough are worse. Graff didn’t come as table not fixed yet.

Jim arrived in aft. L.R. went to Junior Dept. Christmas Party at church. Maureen went too. Ray took and brought them home. Lorene brought ½ bushel apples, peck sack of oranges, jar of jelly and sample of her fruitcake.

Ray went to early church. Pat stayed in car and went with him to St. Louis to get M.E. between 10 and noon. They got back at 2:30 p.m. Ray started eve. shift today. M.E. called Margaret Troy.
Monday, December 24, 1951
Ray took M.E. down on avenue to Christmas shop. Junior Dept. sent M.E. a poinsettia plant (3 large blooms). Dick Watson, Leora and 4 children here in a.m. and invited Caryl & Jim for dinner tonight. Ray worked 4 to midnight.
Tuesday, December 25, 1951
[Christmas] Got up at 7 a.m. Ate breakfast and exchanged gifts at 8 a.m. Carol and Alan came in morning. Had pre-cooked ham, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, mince pie, and coffee for noon dinner. Ray worked 4 to midnight. Aunt Helen came at 6:30 p.m. and Mr. Diller came for her at 9:30.

Caryl & Jim took Mike to Dr. Lewis before noon. Ray drove them downtown as cabs were all busy on account of icy streets. Ray worked on treatment table. He works 4 to midnight tonight. Caryl & Jim didn’t come home. They were to have supper at Laura’s tonight. Received letter from Mother D. Returned M.E.’s dress to her as too small. Sent her a letter, too.

Checked weight–147 lbs. Ray took L.R. to dentist. Filled one upper left tooth. Talked to Elsie. Said Charles not so good and doctor has done all he can. Caryl’s sister, Bonnie, here in late aft. Ray should be off tonight but Madden is on 1 week’s vacation.

Jim & Caryl left to catch 11:45 a.m. train but came home as train had wrecked. Ray took them back and they left at 1:40 p.m. Ray off today. Went to church to practice for solo on Sunday. Came home and went back at 8:45 as pianist at banquet. Frances, Esther, Blanche Mabry, Zella Cormeny helped serve and gave him ice cream and cake. Then he went to Dominic’s and J. Lazar’s and got home at 1:30 a.m. Brought fried fish and fruitcake. Pat went to a show.

Ray took L.R. to dentist. Filled tooth and has to go back again next Saturday. Received box of Loft’s candy from Ken and Anne. Ray went to work at 4 p.m. and came home at 12:15 a.m.

Aunt Helen here this eve. Ray, Pat and L.R. went to S.S. Pat and L.R. came home on bus. Ray stayed for church. We went to Bob’s at 2 p.m. Charles Jones and wife called at 4 p.m. Ray went to work at 4 p.m. and got home at 2 a.m.

Wes, Alice, Betty, Mike, Jane and dog here at 9:30 a.m. Ray took L.R. to Pauline’s for music lesson at 10:30 then dropped her off at Diller’s for lunch at 11:45. Picked her up at 2:30 p.m. and brought her home and went on to work. He finished repair work on treatment table. He got home at 12:15 a.m. and left at 1:15 a.m. to get chicken sandwiches at Lazar’s. Children and I waited until 2:45 a.m. and then went to bed. He came back at 4:30 a.m. I helped L.R. with her book reports.
