Tuesday, January 1, 1952

I got up at 10:30 a.m.  Put stewing chicken on.  Made dumplings.  Ate at 1:30 p.m.  Lorene came.  Ray had to be at work at 4 p.m.  Pat went to a show.

Wednesday, January 2, 1952

Graff came tonight.  Cousin Willis was coming but said he’d come Thursday when he heard Graff would be here.

Thursday, January 3, 1952

Cut out M.E.’s jumper.  Ray went to choir rehearsal.  Cousin Willis came and brought L.R. a box of candy as her book hasn’t come yet.  Helped her with book report.

Friday, January 4, 1952

Ray took clothes to laundromat.  Graff here tonight.  Harriet & Frances Jordan, Norma Brooks and Ralph McLean here tonight to practice (mixed quartet of which Ray is also a member).  Cousin Willis called to say Dr. Romence & wife are coming tomorrow night to show colored motion pictures they took on trip to Honolulu.  Cousins Willis & Mary are coming, too.

Ray received and forwarded Caryl’s pension check.  Fixed M.E.’s green plaid dress that Aunt Helen gave her.  Received letter from Ray’s mother with $10 enclosed for dress for M.E.  Also said she’d pay for M.E.’s glasses for October 24, 1951, birthday present.

Sunday, January 6, 1952

Ray and girls went to S.S. and 10:30 church.  Ray sang a solo at 8:00 church.  He went to work at 4 p.m.  Aunt Helen here in eve.  I wrote letters to Olwen, Cousin Nell, Wilma MacDonald, and Jane Diller.  Mr. Diller mailed all but Wilma’s.

Called Mrs. Buck and mailed Wilma’s letter.  Also wrote Mother D.  Graff came in evening.

Tuesday, January 8, 1952

Bob here this a.m.  I ordered 2 dresses from Roland’s for $7 ea. (on sale) for M.E.  She added $4.00 Christmas money.  Lorene here tonight and cut M.E.’s, L.R.’s & my hair.

M.E.’s dresses came in aft.  Beautiful!!  Graff came tonight.

Thursday, January 10, 1952

Ray took girls to Dr. Fleischli for eye exams.  Both need stronger lenses and M.E. larger frames.  M.E.’s cost $23 and L.R.’s $31.50.  Ray went to choir rehearsal.  I helped L.R. with book report.  M.E. wrote Grandma D. a letter.

L.R. went to Dr. Ratliff (dentist) for last time this a.m.  Pat to Dr. Curtis.  Ray worked 4-12 shift.

Monday, January 14, 1952

Graff here tonight.  Pat went to Scout meeting.  Ray worked 4-12 and got home at 1:30 a.m.  L.R. took music lesson.

Ray off today.  Madden working his shift.  He works day shift for him Thursday.  He attended C.W.L.P. meeting at garage and received 20-year emblem. 

Wednesday, January 16, 1952

Berdine gave me a Toni in short hair (back of neck) and pinned up my hair.  She gave M.E. a whole Toni.  Buzz came out and had lunch with us.  M.E. went home with Berdine at noon and had lunch there.  Berdine finished her hair and she came back at 3 p.m.  Ray works 4-12.  Letter and check for M.E.’s glasses came from Mother D.  Graff here tonight.

Thursday, January 17, 1952

Ray working 8-4 today to repay Madden for working for him Tuesday.  Cut out M.E.’s white blouse.  Ray went to choir rehearsal and brought ice cream sandwiches home.  L.R. finished a book report.  Cousin Willis came just before supper.

Friday, January 18, 1952

Ray home today.  Took girls to Dr. Fleischli and got their glasses.  M.E.’s look nice on her.  Graff here.  Peggy Wallace here in aft. and brought box of birthday cards for S.S. class members.

Saturday, January 19, 1952

Pat went to Dr. at 1 p.m.  Ray worked last 4-12 shift.  Aunt Helen here tonight and brought curtains, shade and complete lamp for Pat’s room.  M.E. received letter from Grandma D.

Sunday, January 20, 1952

Ray started day shift today.  Pat went to S.S. on bus and L.R. went to S.S. and church with Yocoms.  Wrote letters to Warren, Ken, Janie Downs, and Mother D.  Pat went to David Kuhn’s and L.R. went to Elliott Ave. Baptist Church with Yocoms in eve.  Ray, M.E. and I were only ones home.  He popped corn and we had Pepsi, too.

Letter to Mother D. not mailed until today.  Pat went to Scouts.  Graff here tonight.  Ray to Dominic’s and brought pop, beer and fish sandwiches for girls and me.  I called Sears and ordered valentines.

Ray went to bean supper and Dominic’s and got home at 1:15 a.m.  L.R. went to Brownie meeting.  We listened to radio in eve. and I worked on M.E.’s blouse.  Received letter from Mother D.

Graff here tonight.  Ray home today and eve.  Had popcorn and pop after Graff left.  L.R. finished a book report.  I talked to Laura and Elsie today.

Received fifty 2-cent stamps from Melfrances for mailing birthday cards to S.S. class members.  Aunt Helen came tonight as she is going to Jacksonville Sunday.  Valentines came from Sears.

Received letter from Caryl.  Graff here tonight.  Ray got a quart of pecan ice cream at Coy’s.  Pat collected and went to a show.  Mrs. Godley here in aft.

Pat went to doctor at 1 p.m.  Ray took car to city garage and changed tires.  Brought fudge bars home.  Finished M.E.’s white rayon blouse.  L.R. not feeling well.

L.R. no better so didn’t go to S.S.  Pat went.  He went to a show in aft.  Ray didn’t go to church tonight.  Listened to radio.  Worked on bridge cloth Lorene gave me.  George Bonn came for about 10 min. this aft.

Pat went to Scout meeting.  Lorene and Katie came and brought 1 doz. Florida temple oranges.  Graff here.  Ray went to union meeting.  Received letter from Shriner’s Hospital.  Carol [Sutton] called and said they were leaving for California tomorrow and had “Alice in Wonderland” album and other things to give girls.  Miss Moore was here from C.G.L. [?]

L.R. went to Brownie meeting.  Ray worked on treatment table.  Ray went out to Sutton’s in a.m. to get things from Carol.  They were loading truck and left at 3:10 p.m.  First “Popular Science” magazine came today.

Cousin Willis went to Memorial Hospital on account of a little cold and temp.  Graff came in eve.  Ray had planned on taking M.E. to St. Louis today because her foot still hurts, but decided not to.

L.R. walked to school alone as Maureen home with a cough.  Ray went to choir rehearsal and brought fudge bars home.  I helped L.R. with 2 book reports.  Called Elsie and she received a letter from Charles postmarked “Murphysborough”.  Pat and I received short letters from Mother D.

Cecil [Yocom] took girls to school this a.m.  WMAY Radio hooks up with NBC today.  Graff here tonight.  Cousin Willis came home from hospital tonight.  Ray boxed Mike’s buggy for mailing.

Lorene came out this p.m. and brought check for $50.  I called Railway Express and they will pick up buggy Monday.  Cousin Willis called this a.m.  “American” magazine came first time.

Children didn’t go to S.S. as too rainy.  Ray went to church in eve. and Aunt Helen came.  Wrote letter to Caryl.

L.R. didn’t go to school as her cold was worse.  Worked on pink dotted Swiss that Ray brought from Sutton’s.  Sending it to Jane as too small for L.R.  “Front Page Detective” magazine came today for first time.  Graff here tonight.

L.R. went to school today and Brownie’s afterwards.  Ray went to see Dr. Stocker and lungs are okay; also went to C.G.L. to see Miss Moore.  We listened to radio and had popcorn and Pepsi-Cola in eve.

Wrote to Mother D.  King of England found dead in bed at 7:30 a.m.  Ray took M.E. to Dr. Lindquist to fill out papers for Board of Education [re home tutoring].  I have a cold so cancelled appointment with Graff.

M.E. and L.R. received letter from Mother D. with $1.00 for each.  Pat received a birthday card and $5.00 from her.  All three received letters from Caryl.  Ray and I received letter from Gilroys.  Ray went to choir rehearsal.  I cut out blue rayon skirt for M.E.

Friday, February 8, 1952

Ironed this morning and baked a birthday cake for Pat.  Ray brought home 2 pint bricks of Rozelle’s strawberry marshmallow sundae ice cream.  Mrs. Maginnis came 1:30 to 2:50 p.m. to tutor M.E.  We liked her very much.  M.E. gave Pat a vanity set; L.R., box of stationery; and we gave him $3.00.  Graff didn’t come tonight on account of my cold.

Wrote letters to Aunt Ethel, Pauline Carswell, and Alice.  L.R. went skating with Connie.  Ray went to Y.B. at 6:50 and got home at 10:35.  I worked on Pat’s dressing table set.  Pat went to dentist today.

No one went to church today.  Aunt Helen came in eve.  She gave Pat a check for $5.00.  Mr. Diller came in and we had popcorn and cake.  M.E. washed and set L.R.’s hair.

L.R. took music lesson.  Mrs. Maginnis came.  Received letter from Caryl.  Finished M.E.’s blue skirt, worked on Pat’s set, and ironed.

Tuesday, February 12, 1952

Lincoln’s Birthday.  Ray home today.  Children didn’t have school today.  Ray took girls to Fred Hignite’s while he got his watch repaired.  I starched clothes and listened to radio.  Girls sent valentines to Grandma and Grandpa, Carol S., Lanny S., Aunt Helen, and Gussie.  I sent one to M. Gilroy.  M.E. sent one to Mrs. Neale.

Ray’s day off.  He took girls to school.  Received valentines from Aunt Helen.  Ironed today.  Sent package to Caryl for birthday–Ray and I, a slip; girls, a pair of nylons.  Ray saw Cousin Willis downtown today.  Cashed check.  Received 5 lb. box of stuffed dates from Doc & Minnie from San Diego, Calif., postmarked 2-6-52.  Ray gave me a Valentine package containing 1 lb. Fannie May “Pixies”.

Received an azalea plant from my secret pal.  Received letter from Caryl enclosing money order for Met. Insurance; I called Mr. Epstein [ins. man].  Ray went to choir rehearsal.  Linda Rae received 34 valentines at school and 2 Hershey bars and cookies; also a number of them through the mail and neighborhood.  Made an apple pie, dropped it and broke pie plate – one good pie gone to the bad (garbage).  Bob came in eve. and said Suttons bought a house in Los Angeles.

Elsie called to tell us that Otto’s brother was killed in car/train accident near Belleville.  She got the word last night.  Received beautiful valentines from Ray, M.E., L.R., and Jim & family; also a card from Doc & Minnie from Monterey Park, Calif.  Mrs. Hanson and Lorene came tonight and brought 1 lb. chocolates in heart-shaped box.  I sent a sympathy card to Elsie & Otto.  Mr. Epstein came and picked up Jim’s insurance book and money order.

Mrs. Maginnis came from 9-10 a.m. instead of Tuesday.  Received letter from Mother D.  Mary Ellen babysat with Donna Jane Garman from 7-9 p.m.  Pat went to dentist.

Ray took children to S.S. and church.  Pat came home at 11 a.m.  He went to a show with Leland Reese in aft.  Ray, girls and I went for a ride; stopped at Dominic’s for case of pop (6 bottles), and cones at Sangamon Dairy.  Willsons came just after we got home.  Aunt Helen came in eve.  Ray started swing shift at midnight tonight.

Received 3 pr. rubber pants from Vick’s for Mike.  L.R. took music lesson.  Graff came tonight.  Ray went to Dominic’s and brought Eskimo pies home and can of beer.  L.R. got an “A” on arithmetic test.

Wrote letters to Caryl and Mother D.  L.R. went to Brownie meeting.  Ray went to church in eve. to practice solo for Sunday.  Brought fudge bars home.  Received lace for vanity set for Pat from Lorene, 35 cents; also, paper for Pat from W.J.S.

Maureen home sick so L.R. walked to school alone.  Aunt Helen phoned about Nannie Jones getting robbed.  Graff came tonight.  Ray went to church to practice with mixed quartet and solo.  I helped L.R. with 2 book reports.  Finished vanity set for Pat.

Aunt Helen came at 7:30 a.m. and we made 2 batches of peanut brittle – one for her and one for us.  She furnished the ingredients.  We were through by 10:50 a.m.  Ray took L.R. to school – Maureen still home with a cold.  Ray worked 4-midnight.  Pat received letter from Mother D.  Cousin Willis came in aft.  He brought 1 lb. box Gilbert chocolates and a book of Riley’s poems (1902 edition).

Made a cherry pie.  Miss Appledorn came today.  Gave Mrs. Maginnis $2.45 to pay Mr. Sieferman for M.E.’s book rental.  Ray worked 4-12.  Berdine wanted M.E. to stay with Maureen but she couldn’t on account of Graff came tonight and is working on her foot, too.

Ray got home at 1:30 a.m. and brought me a piece of fish.  He left at 11 a.m. to get groceries.  Pat went to dentist at noon and he completed his filling.  Mrs. Maginnis came at 1:30 p.m. to make up Lincoln’s birthday.  Lorene got pattern for M.E.

Ray picked up blouses and socks Aunt Helen bought for M.E.  Dresses for M.E. came from Roland’s today.  She wore the navy blue taffeta tonight to the 8th grade party at YMCA.  Barbara Bailey and her mother took her and brought her home.

Received letters from Alan and Caryl , and a card from Mother D. about leaving Des Moines yesterday and going to suburb of Detroit.  Dad is going to work in Chrysler plant there.  Ray & I & children sent birthday cards to Aunt Ethel.  Graff here tonight.  Girls and I sat up til Ray got home at 12:30 and had a lunch with him.

Pat went to dentist.  I worked on M.E.’s red plaid dress.  We were all home tonight – nice!  Had popcorn and pop.  Ray took my braces and shoes to shoe repairman to have braces removed.  M.E. washed my hair and set it; also, L.R.’s.

Ray sang in mixed quartet at 8 a.m.  He came for children and took them to S.S.  He went to deacons’ meeting in aft.  Goes to work at midnight tonight.  He took girls’ picture in snow this aft.

Pauline cancelled music lesson as she had a bad cold.  Baked a loaf of date nut bread.  Pat went to a show.  Ray, girls & I spent an enjoyable evening at home.  Graff didn’t come as he has a bad cold.

Mrs. Maginnis came at 10:30 a.m.  L.R. took $2.40 for 6 doz. Girl Scout cookies to Brownie meeting tonight.  S.S. class meeting at Eileen Boyle’s tonight but I didn’t attend as too cold.  Ray home tonight.  Received letter from Mother Durst.

Called Elsie and Gus came before I hung up.  She and Russell are coming out for supper Tuesday evening.  Ray went to prayer meeting and mixed quartet practiced afterwards.  Martha S. brought Girl Scout cookies after supper.  Mrs. Maginnis came at 1:30 p.m.  Received letter from Jane in Chicago.  Bro. Laughlin here in afternoon.

Graff came tonight and Lorene and Mrs. Hanson came after he left.  Mrs. Hanson brought a glass of jelly.  Pat went to a show.

L.R. went skating at Moonlight Gardens with Mrs. Yocom and Maureen.  Ray worked today for Buedel as he’s taking his shift next Wednesday when Ray takes M.E. to St. Louis for checkup.  Received magazine from Marian Gilroy.

Ray went to 8 o’clock church, came and got children for S.S.  We took a ride in aft.  L.R. went with Maureen to Armory for Girl Scout birthday party.  She had supper at Yocom’s and then went to Elliott Ave. Baptist Church.

Mrs. Maginnis here at 1:30 p.m.  L.R. took music lesson.  Graff here tonight.

Gus and Russell here tonight for supper.  They brought meatloaf, green beans, potatoes and bread.  We furnished salad (lemon-lime jello with cottage cheese & crushed pineapple), devil’s food cake with ice cream and frozen strawberries, and coffee.  Berdine fixed my hair this a.m.  Mrs. Maginnis came at 10:45 a.m.  Aunt Ethel is coming to Springfield to stay at Wrightwood Nursing Home.

Ray took Mary Ellen to St. Louis for checkup.  Graff didn’t come today as I am under the weather.  Pat received letter from Mother D.  Mrs. Godley here for a little while in aft.  Ray & M.E. got back at 4 p.m.  M.E. has to go back again in a couple months for another checkup.  Wrote to Mother D.  Ray went to prayer meeting and mixed quartet rehearsal.

Mrs. Maginnis came at 11 a.m.  Cousin Willis called at 11:30.  Ray washed this a.m.  Wrote letter to Jim & Caryl.  Children wrote letters to Grandma.

Pat & girls received letter from Caryl.  Graff did not come tonight.  Mrs. Maginnis came at 1:30 p.m.

Mrs. Maginnis came at 9:30 a.m.  Lorene came in aft. and brought L.R. and M.E. each a book (“Five Little Peppers Midway” and “Five Little Peppers Grown Up”).  Willsons and Bob and Marge here tonight.  M.E. shampooed and set L.R.’s hair.

Ray went to 8 o’clock church and then came for children and took them to S.S.  Afterwards, they stopped at Bob’s and got Mom’s picture and pr. slippers Marge thought L.R. could wear, but heels are too high.  Ray, girls and I went for a ride in aft.  We had baked turkey for dinner, also mashed potatoes, gravy, jello salad, and angel food cake with chocolate icing.

Mrs. Maginnis came at 1:30 p.m.  L.R. took music lesson.  Graff came tonight.  Ray took M.E. to Dr. Delano.  Ray went to work at midnight.  Ordered pair of dark blue slippers from Spiegel’s for L.R., $4.26.

L.R. went to Brownie meeting.  Aunt Ethel moved to Wrightwood Nursing Home.

Graff here tonight.  Ray went to church and quartet practice later.  L.R.’s slippers came from Spiegel’s but too large.  Pat got pictures he took of girls from Watts tonight and they’re good.  He went to a show.

Ray had car wheels changed and straightened at Goodyear’s.  L.R. made a book report tonight.  Ray returned L.R.’s slippers at Spiegel’s and they refunded the money.  Mrs. Maginnis came at 1:30 p.m.  L.R. went to movie after school.

Wrote a letter to Vernon Nickell, Superintendent of Public Instruction, for “This is Our Soil” for L.R. for school.  Ray took M.E. to Dr. Delano again at 10 a.m.  Mrs. Maginnis came at 1:30 p.m.  Graff here tonight.

Ray sang in mixed quartet at 8 o’clock service, came back and got children for S.S.  Took film to Watts.  Pat went to show in aft.  Ray’s about sick with a cold.

Mary Ellen went to Dr. Delano at 10 a.m.  Mrs. Maginnis here at 1:30 p.m.  Graff here tonight – told him to come twice a week.  Cousin Willis here in aft.  Ray has the flu.  Received letter from Caryl Pearce with picture.  L.R. took music lesson.  Ray didn’t work tonight.  Johnny Lazar worked for him.

L.R. furnished “nibbles” at Brownie meeting.  I made Easter baskets with doughnuts, etc.  Ray took them to Skibitzski’s in afternoon.  Mrs. Maginnis here at 1:45.

Mrs. Godley here in late aft.  Mrs. Maginnis here at 1:30 p.m.  Public schools closed today for Teachers’ Institute.  Aunt Helen picked out Easter hats for girls.  Grandma D. is paying for them.  Ray took them downtown to meet her.  Children received letters from Grandma D.  Graff here tonight.  Ray got L.R.’s spring coat at cleaners.

L.R. had to be at school at 8:30 a.m. so Ray took her.  She helped Miss Hibbs with library books.  Berdine gave me a Toni.  Mrs. Maginnis came at 1:35 p.m. Cousin Willis here in aft.

Graff here tonight.  Ray sang with quartet at youth evangelistic meeting at church tonight.  I went to Dr. Ratliff and had 2 teeth filled and one x-rayed.  Ray, M.E. and I went to lunch.

Ray and girls went to S.S.  Ray took girls to Pantheon in aft. and picked them up.  He went to church in eve.  Aunt Helen didn’t come tonight.

L.R. was supposed to go to school early and forgot.  She took her music lesson in aft.  Ray returned skirt to M.W. and got money back.  Ordered skirt, 3 suits for Mike, and a cardigan from Sears, and vest and ties from Spiegel’s.  Graff didn’t come tonight.  Mrs. Maginnis here at 1:30 p.m.  Wrote letters to Mother D. and Caryl.

L.R. went to Brownie meeting.  L.R.’s skirt, M.E.’s blouse, and Mike’s suits came from Sears.  Shortened skirt.  Mike’s suits too small (size 1) so reordered in size 2.  Sent Easter cards to Mother & Dad D., Jim & family.

Ray took L.R. to town and exchanged slippers at Schiff’s.  She went to Edna Sutton’s birthday party.  Received lily plant from Ray & children and hydrangea from secret pal.  Lovely! – both.

[Easter] Ray and girls went to S.S. and church.  Pat just S.S.  Ray started eve. shift today.  Aunt Helen here in eve.  She gave Pat a picture; M.E. a slip; L.R. 3 pr. anklets; and I received 2 pr. nylon hose.  Certainly nice!  She treated with ice cream sandwiches and she got a “drumstick”.  We had turkey, dressing, gravy, potatoes, asparagus, cranberry sauce, and raspberry pie!

Mrs. Maginnis isn’t coming today.  Jaycees met at Filter Plant tonight and gave Ray a case of Coca-Cola and 2 loaves of bread.  I made oatmeal cookies in a.m.  Three sunsuits came today from Sears for Mike.

L.R. wore circular skirt for first time with dotted Swiss blouse.  Brownie meeting today.  Mrs. Maginnis came at 10:15 a.m.  Received letter from Mother D.  Sent 3 sunsuits, 3 pr. plastic pants to Mike for his birthday, and slippers and slip for Caryl.  Laura called today.  Ray went to Sears to exchange sunsuits for Mike.

L.R. made book report.  She and Pat wrote to Grandma D.  Mrs. Maginnis here 1:30-2:30 p.m.  I ordered sundress, 8 pr. sox for L.R. and M.E. and rayon blouse from Spiegel’s, blouse for M.E. and 2 pr. panties for L.R. from Sears.  Ray got pictures from Watts (taken Sunday) – Good!

Mrs. Maginnis here at 10:40 a.m.  L.R. went early to school.  Ray off today.  Sent letter to Mother D. and enclosed 2 pictures of girls taken last Sunday.  Ray went to choir rehearsal.  I called Aunt Helen.  She’s had a bad cold.  Helped L.R. with book report.  Pat got new expansion band for watch tonight.

Mrs. Maginnis came at 1:30 p.m.  Peg Wallace came in afternoon, too.  Sent money for baby jackets ($1.50) and tie (35 cents) to Mrs. Godley.  Graff here tonight.  Ray had to go to union meeting at power plant tonight.  Received package from Spiegel’s.  L.R.’s sundress, shirt, socks, and M.E.’s socks very nice.  Ray got L.R.’s Book 4 for music today.  Went to dentist today.  Paid him $20.

Letter and pictures of girls finally mailed to Mother D. today.  Ray got seat covers for car and aluminum gutters from Sears.  Received letter from Caryl.  Ray got 3 doz. eggs from Aunt Helen (26 cents doz.).

Daylight Savings Time went into effect today.  Ray and girls went to S.S. and church and I went with them for ride around lake after dinner.  Redbud trees were at their best.  Ray went to work at 4 p.m.  Aunt Helen came in eve.  She sent Pat for ice cream sandwiches and popsicles.  I ordered dress and pajamas from Florida Fashions.

Mrs. Maginnis here at 1:30 p.m.  Cousin Willis here later.  L.R. took music lesson.  Ray took maroon seat covers to exchange for green ones but they’re out of them.  They will get more end of week.  Graff here.  Cousin Willis also gave L.R. a book “Phronsie Pepper” and brought lots of vegetables from Harm’s and asparagus from L.D. Spaulding.

Package came from Florida Fashions but sent12 misses dress instead of girl’s 12.  Ray mailed it back this aft.  I ordered long-leg p.j.’s by mistake, too.  Too much “hurry up” when I wrote order.  Very nice merchandise, though.  Mrs. Maginnis came at 1:30.  Sent letters to L.D. Spaulding, Caryl P., and Cousin Nell.  Buzz here this eve.  Called June Bentley at Lake Club about U.S. sending an ambassador to the Vatican City.

L.R. home with a cold today.  Spiegel order of 2 polo shirts and shorts came today – lovely.  Mrs. Maginnis came at 1:30 p.m.  Girls and I received letters from Mother D.  I sent $1.00 to McCall’s for 8-month magazine subscription.  June Bentley and one of her patrons made an uncomplimentary remark, such as “stupid” and “shallow” over the air tonight pertaining to my phone call last night.  Later, 3 others sided in with me.

L.R. better today.  Called preacher about Ambassador to Vatican City.  Returned dress to Mother D. as too large.  Also sent letter.  Ray went to choir rehearsal.  Pat went to see “Greatest Show on Earth” at Orpheum tonight.

L.R.’s cold much better.  I had tooth extracted at 10 a.m. at Dr. Yates’ office, $5.00.  L.R. stayed at Yocom’s.  Got a box of candy at Martha Washington Shop for Aunt Helen.  Ray called Graff and told him not to come as my gums were too sore.  Ordered t-shirts for Pat and a pair of shorts for L.R. from M.W.  Mrs. Maginnis came at 1:30.  Ray home tonight.  Girls and I made fudge.

L.R. complained of pain in chest and back.  Couldn’t get Dr. Romence, he’s out of town.  Tonight is Ray’s last evening shift.

Mother’s Day.  Ray started day shift today.  Children didn’t go to S.S.  Ray took them to see “Greatest Show on Earth” at Orpheum in eve.  Aunt Helen stayed with me.  Secret Pal sent me pair of hose and girls gave me a pair.  Received card from Caryl & Jim.

Ray was supposed to be off today but had to work as Major Bray is still sick.  L.R. home today as her back and chest still hurts.  Called doctor’s office at 1 p.m. and didn’t get him until 9 p.m.  He sent medicine from Watts (sulpha and penicillin).  Ray went to get car and came back at 11 p.m.  Mrs. Maginnis here at 1:30.  Cancelled my dentist appointment since Ray had to work.  Made one for 10 a.m. next Tuesday.

Ray and Mary Ellen left at 7:20 a.m. for St. Louis.  L.R. still home.  Aunt Helen stopped for a few minutes and left 2 quarts strawberries and sack of fresh spinach.  Cousin Willis brought letter from Jessie Bode (to Aunt Helen) and a sack of asparagus.  Talked to Mrs. Hart in aft.  Ray and M.E. got home at 5 p.m.

Mrs. Maginnis here at 1:30 p.m.  Ray went to choir rehearsal.  L.R. still home but made 2 book reports (total to date - 38).  Girls wrote to Grandma tonight.  Mrs. Neale called M.E.

Ray and Pat picked up package at M.W. ($2.08).  Contained Pat’s t-shirts but L.R.’s shorts were cancelled – suggested I reorder in 2 weeks.  Received letter from Mother D. which contained $5.00 instead of Mother’s Day dress.  Graff here tonight.  L.R.’s red dot dress came from Florida Fashions and it’s adorable.  They refunded $1.00 by mistake, which made the dress cost $1.98 – not bad!  Started to shorten it this eve.

Finished “City of Discontent” by Mark Harris.  Baked a rhubarb pie, washed out some things, and finished hem in L.R.’s red dot dress.  Mrs. Maginnis here at 2:15 p.m.  Lorene phoned.

Mrs. Maginnis here from 1:15-2:15 p.m.  Frances Jordan here in eve.  She left card for Linda Rae for Lake Springfield Christian Assembly Camp.  Lorene and her mother were here, too.  She brought some watches for us to see and a graduation gift for M.E.  Graff here tonight.  Linda Rae went to school and got along okay.  Also took music lesson – started in Book 4.

We went to town in evening to get bed lamp shade but none of the stores carry them.  Saw Ruth McKinnie and Lillian Richardson, her husband and daughter.  Got ice cream cones and stopped at Dominic’s.  Girls and I stayed in car.  Mrs. Godley here in aft.  Graff called that he wouldn’t come tonight.  Received card from Mother D. saying they were going to Indianapolis, Ind. Thursday and Friday.

L.R. and Maureen went to library on avenue to get books.  Girls cleaned Grandma’s room as Aunt Helen is coming to stay all night.  She came about 6:30 p.m.  Ray and girls went after her.  John Lazar, wife and John Perry came after supper and brought beer and pretzels.  Frances Jordan called at 8:30 to say she’ll pick up girls in morning.

L.R. went to Brownie meeting.  Received a card from Gus and Russell and one from Marian and Tom, a letter from Carol Sutton and one from Ken.  Their baby boy was born at 11:30 p.m. on May 23, weight 8 lbs.  Wrote letters to Ken, Alice, Cousin Emma and Caryl P.  I went to dentist in a.m.  Mrs. Maginnis came at 1:30.  Talked to Elsie, Aunt Helen, Lorene, Bob, and Mary Taylor on phone.

Ray took M.E. to town in a.m. to get white slippers for graduation.  I ordered red sandals for L.R. from Sears.  Berdine came up for about an hour.  Ray mailed my letters and package to Ken.  Received letter from Aunt Fannie.  Ray worked on radio and got a quart of ice cream and chocolate syrup.  Mrs. Neale came to bring high school card for M.E. to fill out to make arrangements for going to school tomorrow.  Mrs. Maginnis here at 1:30.  Ray took flower basket to Aunt Helen to fill for Mother’s grave.

L.R. went to school early to help Miss Hibbs.  Miss Hibbs gave L.R. a lovely bottle of cologne.  Mrs. Neale stopped for M.E. at 8:40 a.m.  Barbara Bailey and her mother came at 9 a.m.  Mrs. Maginnis came for a few minutes for me to sign a couple papers.  Received letter from Mother D. and wrote letters to Aunt Fannie, Pauline Baker, Mother D., and Janie Downs.  Went out to cemetery with Ray and girls to put flowers on Helen’s and Mother’s graves.  Aunt Helen came after supper.  Ray went to choir rehearsal.  Mrs. Godley gave M.E. a necklace.  Mrs. Hanson and Lorene came out.

M.E. went to school all day.  I went to Brownie Pow-Wow at Skibitzski’s in aft.  M.E. graduated at 6:45 p.m.  She received wrist watch from Grandma D.; one from us; corsage from L.R.; ring from Aunt Helen; $1.00, Mrs. Hanson; hose, Lorene; hose, Cousin Mary; shorts, Yocoms.  I went to class meeting at M. Underwood’s.  Girls and Maureen went to Aunt Helen’s and L.R. stayed all night at Yocom’s.  L.R.’s sandals came from Sears today.  Ray went to Bob’s and then to Aunt Helen’s.  Ed is home.  Horace went with Bob to bring him home.  They took in an opera – “Carmen”.

M.E. went to school to pose for class picture.  Received letter from Alice.  Elsie called and read letter from Ken – baby named Scott.  Last day of school.  Went for a ride in eve. and got cones.  Maureen went along and stayed all night.  Ray took watch back to Lorene.  Also went to church for an hour to rehearse with mixed quartet.

Pat went to high school and L.R. to Ridgely to get report cards.  Berdine stopped for a few minutes to show a sundress and ask if I’d make a bolero.  Ray went to choir rehearsal.  Mrs. Goldsby sat on our porch for a couple of hours and visited with me.  Lorene and her mother came for a few minutes and brought a wool suit for M.E. and old hose for me.

Graff didn’t come tonight as too warm (97).  We went to John Lazar’s and sat in yard until storm came up and then went inside.  Pat went to a show.  I ordered a tie for M.E. to give Ray, and linen handkerchief for L.R. to give him.  I ordered a can of “Stag” from Dominic for Ray.  Charlie Hartmann called Ray about call for Mike to go to St. Louis.

Father’s Day - M.E. gave Ray a tie and L.R. gave him a handkerchief.  Children went to S.S. but Ray only one to stay for church.  Did I get a break today!  Ray had our dinner sent out from “Dixie Barbeque” – chicken and all the trimmin’s!  Mmmm yummy.  Aunt Helen came out in eve. and Ray went to work at midnight.

Ray went at 6:45 p.m. to practice with mixed quartet and stayed for prayer meeting.  L.R. went to Canterbury’s farm in aft. with junior girls from D.V.B.S.  She went home with Nancy Dean and stayed until Ray picked her up after prayer meeting.  Mrs. Goldsby brought strawberry “New Freeze” and cookies for M.E., me, and herself.  Very delicious!

Gilroy.  Sent pair hose and handkerchief to Margaret Baker for her birthday, also a card.  Aunt Helen sent dress out from Roland’s for me.  I will apply $5.00 from Mother D. for Mother’s Day gift and $8.00 from Aunt Helen for birthday ($12.95).

M.E. had last school lesson today.  Mrs. Maginnis took the girls to Lincoln Park.  L.R. played with Carol M.  Today is Mr. and Mrs. Wenger’s [neighbors] 50th wedding anniversary.  We sent them a card.  Girls and I sat on porch until Ray came home from work about 12:15 a.m.  Aunt Helen and Mr. Diller came for a few minutes to bring L.R. a suitcase, towels, pillowslip and blanket for camp.

Ray took L.R. to L.S.C.A. camp to get her things as she decided to come home.  Ruth Ann came at 1:30 to stay all night.  Caryl’s check came so I forwarded it and enclosed a letter from me.

Ray worked today.  Graff did not come as it’s a holiday.  Aunt Helen, Ruth Ann, Uncle Rob and Aunt Ethel here for picnic supper.  Aunt Ethel and Uncle Rob left about 7:15 and Gus and Russell came around 8 p.m. and stayed until 10:00.  We had a nice display of fireworks.  Ruth Ann went home with Aunt Helen.

Ray practiced at church with mixed quartet.  Girls and I went along and stopped on way to church to give Lorene her birthday gift.  While parked at church we saw Melfrances and Mrs. Miller.  On way to Sangamon Dairy we saw Margaret Baker and chatted with her for a while.  Ordered 2 dresses for self from M.W.

Ray took children to S.S.  He sang at 10:30 church with mixed quartet but didn’t stay for sermon.  Nancy Dean here for dinner.  They went to swimming pool and Ray took Nancy home at 5 p.m.  Cousin Willis phoned at 9 p.m.  Ray started midnight shift 6 days a week on account of vacations.

L.R. didn’t take music lesson today as Pauline on vacation.  Cousins Willis and Mary flew to Oklahoma City this a.m. to visit Fred.  Ray took girls to Strand [Theater] at 1 p.m. and will pick them up at 4:15 p.m.  Mailed books to Dad D.  Graff here tonight.  Ray went to tent meeting.

Went to Dr. Ratliff at 10 a.m. to have upper plate adjusted.  Today is Pat’s day off.  Nancy Dean came out at 6 p.m. to stay all night.  Sent letter to Alan and note to Vivian Barton to thank Lallah Rookh Chapter for remitting 1952 dues.  Called Vivian and Lorene.  Maureen got homesick and came home from camp tonight.  L.R. didn’t take music lesson as Pauline is still on vacation.

Ray took L.R. to Dr. King [orthodontist] to see about braces.  He said Dr. Ratliff would have to take x-rays of lower teeth before braces can be used.  Received letter and $5.00 from Mother D.  Berdine and Maureen came for a little while this a.m.  M.E., L.R., Nancy and Maureen went to a show in aft.  Nancy went home at 5:30 p.m.

Ray went out to Laura’s and brought Jim, Caryl & Mike here in a.m.  They stayed for lunch and supper.  Caryl packed all their clothes in chest of drawers and called Underfanger’s to pick up their bedroom set to store.  Cousin Willis called.  They got back yesterday from Oklahoma City.  Ray took clothes to laundromat.

Grand then drove out to Laura’s to give Jim a carton of cigarettes [birthday present] and take Mike’s diapers.

Called Marian about girls going to Chicago tomorrow.  Girls and Ray were going to State Fair but it was too rainy.  Betty Cantrall and girlfriend were here tonight.  They came for the fair and are staying with Aunt Helen.

Girls left at 12:15 p.m. – train 25 min. late – arrived in Chicago at 4:20.  It was 1 hr. and 12 min. late.  They met Marian and Tom okay, who took them out for supper and then picked up their suitcases on next train (3 hrs. later).  Ray and I went to Springfield Drive-In to see “With a Song In My Heart.”  Sent letters to Mother D. and Alice.  Ray wired $5.00 plus 94 cents for money order to Fred Hignite at Belleville, Ill. to apply on watch repair (Hamilton).

Fred Hignite here this aft. and brought Ray’s watch.  Nora and Geraldine Spaulding came and brought 7 of Nora’s prize-winning glads.  Ray and I picked up George Sponsler and Fred and came home.  George gave Ray some pointers on playing the guitar.  I went with Ray when he took them home.  Received card from Marian.  Ray got one of Clara’s chickens from Aunt Helen – she’s keeping 2 more in their deep freeze.

Ray, Pat and M.E. went to St. Louis for M.E.’s check-up.  Left at 7:10 a.m. and got back at 5:30 p.m.  They also went to see Roy Graves [in St. Louis].  Aunt Ethel came in aft.  Ruth McKinnie brought her.  Berdine and Maureen here in a.m.  M.E. washed Linda Rae’s hair this eve.  We drove out to 1636 Homewood – Hertels [current owners]  are home!  Minnie phoned.

Girls rode bikes again.  Called Elsie and she said Russell’s father died yesterday.  Called Lindley’s and ordered flowers from Aunt Helen, Ray and me.  Wrote Mother D.  Bess Kenney and Mrs. Parsons called on me this aft. and brought bouquet of glads.  Ray went to funeral home to see Russell’s dad.  Berdine came early in aft.   We went for a ride in eve. and picked up red material at Lorene’s for facing L.R.’s dress (red plaid).  Pauline Baker called and said she’d come Saturday.

Wes, Alice, Betty and Jane came at 11:00 and stayed for lunch.  Jane, M.E., L.R. and Maureen had their pictures taken by Mrs. Yocom and went to Orpheum to see “Just for You” – Bing Crosby and Jane Wyman.  Jane stayed for supper and we took her afterward to Bob’s.  Went over to Lazar’s later.  Pauline Baker called at noon and said she would come out next week.

Phoned Elsie and Cousin Willis this a.m.  An old man here at 4:30 p.m. to see house.  Linda Rae took music lesson.  Ray got a tube for bike at Western Auto after work and put it on last night.  Went for a ride.  Aunt Helen called and said she bought 2 lamp shades.  Mr. Johnson called to tell us he’s received abstract for 715 Keys and made appointment with Ray to go to savings and loan office tomorrow.

Pauline Baker Carswell came at 3:45 and left at 5:15 p.m.  Lorene called but didn’t come out on account of weather.  Ray took L.R. to dentist for impressions for “spacers”.  She went back to school at noon.  Ray sent 2 lb. box candy and 1 lb. mixed nuts to Mother & Dad D. for their birthdays.  Mr. Mayfield killed by truck on Rt. 66 tonight.

Mr. Johnson came and tacked “For Sale” sign on house this aft.  Ray made arrangements for loan on house after work.  Sent sympathy card to Mrs. Mayfield & family.  He’s to be buried tomorrow.  Took a ride out past house.

Ray took laundry to laundromat this eve. and we went with him when he picked it up.  M.E. went to school early this a.m. to take a spelling test and L.R. left early to help Miss Hibbs with library work.

L.R. and I cleaned stove elements and packed barrel with good dishes.   M.E. and I washed and starched clothes, she cleaned house, etc.  Mr. Noll came in aft. and quoted $49 on sanding and refinishing bedroom and closet floors and borders around rugs in living and dining rooms.  Pat packed his clothes, cleaned backyard, etc.  Girls and I went with Ray in eve. to get groceries.

Clara and Eileen came this a.m. for bunk beds and kitchen set; also took kitchen utility cabinet for Aunt Helen.  She came with them and stayed all day.  Aunt Ethel came in aft.  Picked over basket of grapes and made 9 glasses of jelly and 3 pints grape jam.  Ray and Pat went out to new house to do some wiring for stove.  I washed dresser scarves, etc.  Received book from Pauline C.

Ironed scarves, doilies, etc.  L.R. got her transfer from school – Scholastic Rating “A” and Deportment “A”.  Received card from Pauline B. Carswell.   Went with Ray to look at dinette sets and he saw one at 5th Street Furniture Co. he and L.R. are crazy about.  Ordered sofa bed from M.W.  Received letter from Caryl.

Pat brought stuff down from upstairs and we all sorted it.  Ray borrowed truck from “City” and moved a lot of things to new house.  Aunt Helen here tonight and gave us a check, $85 (loan) for sofa bed.  Ray paid $50 on dinette set.  Mrs. Goldsby brought baby dress for me to see – she’d washed and ironed it – turned out beautifully – gave me $2.00 for my work on it.

Ray got truck again and took children to S.S. as he took a load out to Homewood.  Aunt Helen and Aunt Ethel here this aft.  Maureen went out to new house with Ray and children this aft.  Ray fixed wire for stove and they washed cabinets.  He changed shifts tonight so went to work at midnight.  Mrs. Goldsby brought her grandson over with his christening dress on.

Received letter from Mother D.  She offered to pay for enclosing breezeway.  Moving van was due at 3 p.m. but didn’t get here until 6:30.  They left Homewood at 8:15.  Gus and Russell had supper ready for us.  Cost $14.20 to move.  Pat and M.E. went to school but L.R. couldn’t as Ray didn’t get home until 8:30 a.m.  L.R. did not take music lesson.  Aunt Helen and L.R. went out to new house when Sears brought new mattress & springs.

Went to S.S. class meeting–progressive dinner, but I just took in last course.  Picked up Marge and took her home.  She got ceramic fruit for dinette.  Called Mr. McEvoy and he said he’d start on breezeway tomorrow.  Ray wrote to his mother about it.  Mr. Johnson called about contract for deed.

Received Vols. 10, 11 & 12 from Unicorn.  Mrs. Burnett came this a.m., also Mr. Johnson, and we told him we’d accept $12,500.  Cousin Willis came this aft. and brought jug of cider.  He’s very enthusiastic about our new home.  Walked on newly laid concrete ramp by mistake.  Left slight heel marks.  Mrs. Noll called to say floor refinishing completed at 715.  Mr. Noll came after supper for his pay, $79.00.

No school today.  Ray and Pat went to 715 to clean attic.  Ray sold rugs and bedroom furniture for $15.  Mrs. Burnett brought ticket for L.R. for Fall Festival at West Grand School.  McEvoy’s finished breezeway this eve. and we paid them.  Gus and Russell came for a few minutes.  L.R. went to Fall Festival with Colburns.  Edith Willson called to say they were leaving Sunday for 10-day trip to Florida.

Ray and Pat went to town in a.m. to get paint at 715, L.R.’s dress at Spiegel’s, and groceries.  Letter came from Mother D. with check for breezeway.  Ray took girls to town and to a show and got lower element for electric range in aft.  He got truck from City in eve. and hauled rest of stuff from 715.  Painted breezeway in aft.

Wrote thank you letters to Mother D. and V. Barton for wheelchair.  Ray, girls and I went to 715.  He took down parallel bars.  Floors look fine.  Ray called Charles Johnson.  Sacco’s can’t raise money to buy house so have to give it up – the people that Gus know are going to take it.  Pat started working at Kroger’s tonight.

Uncle Rob brought Marshall, Dorothy and their 3 children out this a.m.  They stopped off in Springfield en route to new pastorage in Rock City, Wyoming.  L.R.’s dress arrived from Florida Fashions – darling!  Pat worked tonight.  Ray fixed catches on utility cabinet doors, girls’ window crane at bedroom window, and put storm sash in doors.  Pat brought 7 cans of Pet milk home from Kroger’s that were smeared by a broken can.

No school today – teachers’ meeting.  Aunt Ethel came in aft.  Mr. Johnson here this a.m. and said couple backed out on buying house as unable to swing it.  A couple by the name of Cunningham are going to take it.  Pat didn’t work tonight.  Maureen came in aft.  Ray picked her up and her mother came after her.

Ray took clothes to laundry.  Received letter from Mother D. which was meant for Jim and Caryl, so wrote them and forwarded her letter.  Cunningham’s are supposed to pay “earnest money” today.  Pat worked tonight.  House sold for $12,300.

Gus was over at noon.  Mrs. Jagow and Mrs. Kenyon [neighbors] called on me today.  Gus took girls to chilli supper tonight at Methodist church.  Ray drove them over and brought them back.  She stayed a little while in eve.  Elsie came back from Florida.  Pat went to work at noon.

Ray sick (stomach) this a.m.  Bob came out and took Ken’s, Jim’s and Wes’ packages and all cards for mailing.  He brought insurance receipts for packages in aft.  I called Dr. Romence at 2 p.m. and he said it sounded like Ray’s appendix.  Johnny Lazar took him to doctor a little after 4:00 and he came home in cab.  Went to St. John’s Hospital with Bob at 5:30 and doctor called at 7:30 saying operation went okay.

Brunk & Sapp brought out new Monarch Range before 9 a.m.  Certainly a wonderful gift.  Russell came at noon and took gas bill to pay and package to mail for Mother & Dad D.  Pat home sick.  My stomach upset last night and today.  Mrs. Burnett came over at 5:00 – sent over some aspirin and Bernard got some Pepsi for me.  Frances Jordan called.

Pat and Bob went hunting down at Aunt Georgia’s.  Ray went to choir rehearsal tonight.

Wednesday, December 31, 1952

Bob out this morning and left at 2:30 p.m.  Received sewing box from Pat and Ray.  Received pair of gloves for belated Christmas presents.  Sent cards (New Year’s) to Wilma MacDonald, Jane Dixon and Charles Jones.  Aunt Helen came out to stay with me while Ray and girls went to potluck and watch night service at church, also burnt mortgage.  Mr. Diller and Hughes were here for fruitcake and coffee.  Pat went to a show.  Ray brought flowers Mrs. Cormeny left for me at 715 Keys.
