J&L got home at 1:30 a.m. We watched the Pasadena Rose Parade and football games all day. Illini beat Washington 17-7. J&L went to Jefferson St. National Food Store for groceries at 5 p.m. – they closed at 6 p.m. Jerry got 3 club steaks for $4.44 plus tax and I paid half. I just about completed B. Gerster’s skirt alterations. J&L took down Christmas tree.

Finished B. Gerster’s 3 skirt alterations. Two bath sheets (towels) from Alden’s came today that I had ordered for Mark for Christmas. Willene came this eve. – brought milk Tom borrowed Saturday, Linda’s cookie press, and a box of stuffed dates. Jerry went to reserve meeting tonight.

Made pleating for wheelchair seat. Jerry went to Peoria. Linda went to National Food Store around noon. The magnetic “Easy Reach” I ordered from Myers Bros. came today, but it’s the same one Lorene got from Miles Kimball, so I ordered a dress (I’ll pay the difference) from Myers Bros. They’ll pick up the “E-Z” when dress is delivered tomorrow.

Finished pleating for wheelchair and put it on; also mended invalid ring cover. Worked a little on Aletha’s beige jacket. Dress was delivered from Myers Bros. which is very nice. Linda got dress from Spiegel’s I ordered for me – the other is back-ordered. She had hair appointment at 2:30. M.E. and Bill here around noon. Mrs. Gerster tried on dress and got her 3 skirts.

L&J went to 10:30 a.m. church – Laughlin preached. They went to Steinberg-Baum’s late aft. Mr. and Mrs. Bartlett came in eve. – brought 1 doz. eggs @ 40 cents. I lengthened belt on my new plaid dress from Spiegel’s, sewed on snap, and pressed it.

We had waffles this a.m. made with wild rice flour and the wild blueberry syrup that Ken and Anne gave me for Christmas. Worked on Aletha’s jacket. Jerry home today.

Wrote “Thank-You” notes to Ken & Anne, Circle #10, Wes & Alice, and a letter to Uncle Rob. Jerry home today – cleaned garage. I worked on Aletha’s jacket. Linda went to Bunco party at Frances Proctor’s.

Jerry went to work today. Finished Aletha’s jacket. Linda and Mark went to Willene’s this aft. Mr. Welton and Mr. Beck came this eve. to quote on ceramic tile – $529 for walls, ceiling and floor for bathroom.

Worked on Mrs. Gerster’s tan dress alterations. Jerry went to Peoria. Mr. Polk from Bernard Friedman’s came at 9 a.m. to see bathroom & give estimate on ceramic tile. Mr. Welton brought catalog of chrome fittings for bathroom late aft. Aletha got her jacket at 5:30. Mr. Beck brought tile samples tonight. Jerry went to reserve meeting. Frances Jordan came tonight.

Finished altering Mrs. Gerster’s dress. Willene and Elizabeth here for lunch. Jerry work in town today. J&L&Mark went to Chilton’s tonight. Linda got a sweater set for me to give Doug Chilton, which they took. Linda got a little suit and pair of socks for him. Sent card to Secret Pal (Wilma MacDonald).

Worked on Mrs. Getzendanner’s clothes. Linda had hair appointment. Jerry worked today. Sue Schoth left coat to be shortened and slacks to be tapered and pocket removed. L&J went to see “Under the Yum Yum Tree” at Senate Theater. M.E. & Bill here tonight. J&L came before they left and showed Christmas motion pictures and Linda served coffee and cookies.

M.E. and Bill came at 10:30 a.m. – had dinner at noon and then M.E. gave me a “Toni” perm. They started home late aft. and car got stuck in snow and they came back – stayed all night. 11" accumulated snow today.

Bill’s friend came in a.m. and Jerry, Bill and friend got car out of drift. M.E. and Bill left about 11 a.m. Jerry went to get groceries a little later. I altered Sue’s red slacks. Phoned Sears re estimate on tiling bathroom. Man came out from American Tile Co. in aft. My Toni perm turned out fine.

Jerry left at 4:25 a.m. for Fairfield. Worked on Mrs. G’s clothes. Jerry came back mid-afternoon. Mr. Jabusch brought storm windows at 5:30 p.m. and installed them. They really shut out the drafts. Received letter from Mrs. Dohrman re Mother D. not writing.

Worked on Mrs. G’s things. L&J went to National Food Store at 11 a.m. Mr. Gardiner and helper came at 9:30 a.m. and installed new window in front bedroom. Jerry took Linda to a baby shower [for a girl at FBI] at Shelby’s and went after her. She won door prize – terry glass “jacs” and stamp holder with scales.

Finished Mrs. G’s things and started replacing zippers in 2 pr. slacks for Mrs. Brummett. L&J went out to Bartlett’s to get 2 doz. eggs @ 40 cents doz. M.E. and Bill here in a.m. and again tonight. Linda got material from Montgomery Ward for her Easter suit ($12.02). .

Jerry went to reserve meeting all day. Ed Ballard brought communion at 11 a.m. I put zippers in Brummett girl’s slacks and started repairing Herb England’s shirt cuffs. Bob, Peggy & Neal Bastas here for 6 o’clock dinner. Neal is certainly a fine baby. Brummett girl got her slacks at 4:30 p.m.

Worked on Herb England’s shirts. Willene gave Linda 16 - ½ pt. bottles of milk that Tom got for trip over the weekend with young people’s group. Linda had to let furnace man in Grandma’s house. Wrote letter to friend of Mother D’s.

Bess Kenney phoned re letter she received from Uncle Rob. Mrs. G got her things in a.m. I worked on Herb’s shirts. Linda got groceries in a.m. and Mark’s hair cut in p.m. Willene came later to see his hair but he was asleep. Linda went to bunco party at Paige’s – won bunco prize – towel and washcloth. I ordered rug from Montgomery Ward for Mark’s room. Lorene here for a few minutes – I paid difference on dress except $1.26 which she wouldn’t accept.

Worked on Herb’s shirts. Linda went to dentist at 1 p.m. Willene stopped in to see Mark’s hair. Linda baked 70 “Sugar & Spice” cookies and a loaf of apricot bread.

Jerry went to Jacksonville and Winchester. Finished Herb’s shirts. Jerry went to reserve meeting tonight. M-W phoned that rug arrived.

Cut out Aletha’s weskit and Linda cut out Carol Chilton’s duster. Linda received picture of Mark from Capital Studios, Madison, Wisc. She took Mark for 11-month checkup this aft. He weighs 26 lbs. 10 oz. and is 30" long.

Worked on Carol’s duster. Jerry worked today. M.E. and Bill here in a.m. She shampooed and set my hair. Linda had hair appointment in p.m. Received letter from Mrs. Dohrman (Mother D’s friend). L&J went to dance in Athens with Barb and Allen.

Worked a little on Carol’s duster. L&J went to Sunday School. Truman Woods and Charles Johnson brought communion at 10:45 a.m. L&J went to shopping center in p.m. They got a frame for Mark’s picture which is a belated Christmas present to Mrs. Bartlett. Uncle Hughes brought 2 pkgs. patties and swiss steaks at 4:20 – is leaving at 5 p.m. for Nebraska. The Bartletts here tonight – Linda served cupcakes she made this afternoon and coffee.

Worked on Aletha’s jacket and Carol Chilton’s duster. Linda cut out her Easter suit. Bill here for a little while – I helped him with income tax returns. Received letter from Uncle Rob. Linda got groceries from National. She and Willene took children for a short walk. Jerry picked up Mark’s rug at M-W ($21.10). Mr. Beck brought more samples of tile tonight. Aletha came for fitting and left material for 2 dresses.

Worked on Carol’s duster. Phoned Young’s and Mr. Carver came out in aft. – ordered RCA Whirlpool washer, dryer, and range to be delivered next week. Old appliances covered down-payment. Carol [Pickering] sent birth announcement of Polly Ann born January 20, weighed 7 lb. 15 oz.

Finished Carol’s duster. Jerry took Linda for hair appointment and he went to work until time to bring her home. Uncle Hughes came about 4:45 p.m. and left when L&J came at 5 p.m. Tom, Kay and Donna here for dinner tonight. M.E. and Bill here around noon to show off her new permanent – very attractive – same girl Linda has gave it.

Worked on Linda’s outfit. Stove, washer & dryer not in town yet. Jerry home today. He got Minnie at her home at 5:30 p.m. and brought her here for dinner. Later, L&J took her to hospital to see Jess.

Jerry went to work until 1 p.m. Linda and Mark went for a walk with Willene and Elizabeth. Later she picked up Carol Chilton at Bartlett’s and they went to town to shop. This morning she went to National Food Store – ordered Corning sauce maker with grocery sales slips. Uncle Hughes brought 1 ½ lb. round steak and 1 ½ lbs. beef patties.

Jerry went to Mt. Sterling. Mrs. Towsley phoned re bathroom tiling and plumbing. Young’s delivered range, washer & dryer. Washer is loaned until mine comes in a couple weeks. Jerry went to reserve meeting tonight.

Mr. Carver and helper from Young’s here in a.m. to connect washer and dryer. They are really nice. Jerry didn’t work today. Linda had dental appointment in p.m. She and Jerry went to “Wagon Wheel” for dinner and basketball game later with Tom and Willene. M.E. and Bill here after work. Linda and I sent birthday cards to Pat.

Jerry had appointment with income tax consultant in a.m. – got home at 11 a.m. He phoned his dad who came out in truck – loaded all junk in garage and hauled to dump. Kenny was with him. Linda had hair appointment in p.m. She, Jerry and Mark went to potluck supper at West Side tonight. M.E. and Bill here tonight.

Price Merc. Co.

Received valentines from K. Gathard, secret pal, M.E. and Bill, L&J&Mark. I sent 1 lb. Russell Stover candy to Wilma MacDonald (my secret pal).

Finished Aletha’s blue dress and started her lilac one. She came after work to get the blue and try on the lilac. Linda took Mark for a walk; later got groceries. Singer serviceman came – will have sewing machine top refinished. Jerry home today. Bill and M.E. here for a few minutes. Linda went to bunco party at Evelyn’s. Mark’s 7th and 8th teeth coming through.

Worked on Linda’s Easter outfit. Jim here this aft. Told us that Illinois State Journal incorrectly printed “Mary Ellen” was to receive Grandma Durst’s ring – should have been “Linda Rae”. Jerry went to office part of the day.

Young’s sent electrician to install convenience outlet for washer & dryer. A little later, two more servicemen brought the new washer. Jerry home today. Shortened Joyce German’s coat and worked on Linda’s outfit. M-W phoned Mark’s birthday gifts here. Jerry washed woodwork in southeast bedroom of Grandma D’s house.

Jerry washed more woodwork at Mother D’s house in a.m. Linda had hair appointment in p.m. She got Mark’s birthday gifts at M-W. His coat and cap, 2 Toddler size, is darling, but a little short in sleeves so I’m reordering a 3 Toddler. Uncle Hughes sent Lawrence out with pkg. chuck roast and one of beef ribs in a.m. and he came at 5:15 and got cans. Jerry went up to 1526 Homewood and did some more cleaning.

Cut out Maria’s jumper and started putting it together. Mrs. Gosses and Laura here in aft. and brought clothes to be altered. Aletha brought pattern, etc. after work and Joyce came later to get skirt and coat. Jerry painted at Mother D’s in a.m. and tonight. Youngs came but couldn’t fix unit – CIPS came to check heater.

Mark is 1 year old today. Worked on Maria’s jumper. Jerry got Mark’s coat at M-W and cake at B&Z. Mark’s birthday party tonight. Bob, Carol, Bobbi, Doug, Kay, Donna, Frances, Diane, Mrs. Dodds, Lois, Mary Ellen, Bill, Barb & Allen & Jimmy Howard came. Served neopolitan ice cream, cake, coffee, tea, and Pepsi. Mark weighs 27 lb. 14 oz. and is 30 ½" long.

Cut out Beth’s jumper and worked on Maria’s jumper. Cousin Willis, Lorene and Mr. DeCastro came in afternoon – brought cider, apples, and sponge toy for Mark. Linda went to Willene’s in afternoon.

Worked on Beth’s jumper. Jerry went to Marion. Linda went to town in a.m. to change 4 of Mark’s suits for Toddler 3 size; also got silverware from Bridge Jewelry Co. to complete 12 place settings of their silver. J&L&Mark took movie projector back to Joneses tonight.

Worked on Beth’s and Maria’s jumpers. Jerry worked today. Joyce, Don, David and Brenda here around noon. Willene and Elizabeth came while they were here. Joyce gave Mark blue overalls with red dot shirt. Linda had hair cut and got Mark two suits at Myers Bros. (orig. $7.98 and $8.98 for $4.00 ea.). Aletha, Beth and Maria came in aft. for fittings. Items I ordered from Bressmer’s were delivered today.

Jerry went to Alton. Altered red print dress and shortened navy wool skirt for Gosses girl. The two women that rode to Alton with Jerry came in to see Mark on their way home. Aletha got girls’ jumpers after work. Jerry painted at 1526 a little while this eve. Cousin Bessie phoned in p.m.

Finished altering all of A. Gosses’ things. Bert got her coat and dress and left material for dress this aft. Linda went to Jerry’s office to sign form for insurance payment of $350 for car accident last fall. M.E. and Bill here a little while around noon. Interlined wrists of Linda’s spring coat tonight. She and I sent a dress to Polly Ann Pickering.

Jerry had all-day reserve meeting. Linda and Mark went to Sunday School (Cradle Roll 1st time) and got polio vaccine at Ben Franklin Junior High School on way home. M.E. and Bill here soon after. Mark, Linda and I went to high school at 3 p.m. and I got polio vaccine, then to Steak ‘n Shake for hamburgers and french fries, Linda had a Coke and I had a chocolate shake.

Jerry went to East St. Louis. Linda cut out Alice Carpenter’s suit. Joan Dunne brought a coat to be altered at 2 p.m. Cousin Willis and Lorene here about 4 p.m. – she left material for a dress for Rebecca [her granddaughter]. Willene came at 1 p.m. – Elizabeth can walk! Worked on Bert’s dress, re-sewed buttonhole on Aletha’s husband’s coat (she brought it after work). Also worked on Alice’s suit.

Jim came tonight with paper for Linda to sign – all 4 grandchildren to receive advance payment of $2,000 from Grandmother Durst’s estate.

Linda went to town in aft. – deposited her check with American Savings & Loan Assn. Made buttonholes on Mrs. Carpenter’s jacket and worked on her son’s pants; also started altering Joan Dunne’s coat. Ann here around noon. Jerry went to Edwardsville.

Linda went to shopping center in aft. and bunco party at Kay’s tonight. Alice Carpenter got her jacket and son’s slacks and Alice Gosses got all her things this aft. M.E. and Bill here tonight. Bill and Jerry painted southeast bedroom ceiling at 1526 Homewood tonight.

Finished Mrs. Nation’s coat. Jerry went to Quincy. Worked on Joan Dunne’s coat. Jerry had to do some work at the office tonight. Willene came to front door for a few minutes around noon to visit. I phoned Grimmett’s re tiling bathroom – Mr. Blottie coming at 10 a.m. this Friday. Frank Nelson came just as Jerry left and they went to get coffee and sandwiches before Jerry went to office.

Jerry went to Decatur; car slightly damaged by teenager whose mother phoned to tell Jerry they would pay to have it repaired. Finished Bert’s dress. Mrs. Nation got her coat around suppertime. Cut out Rebecca’s red print dress. Linda went to dentist.

M.E. shampooed and set my hair in a.m. Bill came, too. Jerry worked today. Bert came for her dress and left material for jumper. She took Joan’s coat so she could match buttons. Linda had hair fixed in p.m. Uncle Hughes brought 4 ½ lb. chuck roast and 2 lb. beef patties. Received letter from Carol Pickering thanking Linda and me for dress we sent to Polly Ann.

Made buttonholes in Joan’s coat and sewed on buttons. She got it in p.m. Lorene got Rebecca’s dress which I finished in a.m. She didn’t come in on account of my cold. She gave me a check for $100 from Cousin Willis and one for $6.00 from her. I had to return Cousin Willis’ check as he forgot to sign it. Linda and Mark went to Chilton’s for lunch. Mrs. Greening brought 2 pr. slacks for zipper replacement.

Received Easter cards from secret pal, Mary Ellen, and Circle #10. Linda got medicine for me.

Easter Sunday (Cold but clear, a few snow flakes). L&J&Mark went to Sunday School. Linda wore new pink suit and blouse I made. Bill and M.E. here for dinner. We had turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, peas & carrots, green beans, rolls, pineapple-cottage cheese salad, Waldorf salad, cupcakes, neopolitan ice cream, iced tea and coffee. M.E. and Bill stayed for supper.

M.E. and Bill here tonight in their new (to them) 1961 Corvair. I ironed five dresses of mine.

J&L&M took projector back to Joneses – Uncle Carroll in hospital with nervous breakdown.

Went to Dr. Ranker’s office at 5:30 p.m. Bill helped Jerry get me up and down the steps. Paid doctor $4.00 and got prescription filled at Steinberg-Baum ($4.40). M.E. served spaghetti, salad, Pepsi, coffee, cake and ice cream. We got home around 10:30.

Willene and Elizabeth here early aft. I ordered 2 pr. p.j.’s for Mark from Sears. Linda went to bunco party tonight and won first prize (floral arrangement) and the bunco prize (blouse).

Linda, Mark, Willene and Elizabeth went for a walk after supper. Ann came afterwards. Jerry did some work for reserves.

Mr. Capranica came at 11 a.m. – estimated $451 for tiling bathroom, plus $4.00 for each towel bar, soap dish, etc. Price doesn’t include sheet rock. Linda, Mark & I met Jerry, M.E. and Bill at Dr. Link’s office at 1:30 p.m. He saved fractured tooth with temporary filling; replaced filling in front tooth and took 4 x-rays of back teeth – $26.00. Pat and Lois sent Mother’s Day card and a dozen white, red and peppermint striped carnations. Jerry & Linda, Carol, Bob, Kay and Tom went to dinner at Babe & Jim’s.

J&L gave me a mirror and rag rug; M.E. and Bill, a dress and compact; and cards from all, including Mark. M.E. fixed my hair. Jim & family came about 8 p.m. – gave me a necklace.

Linda washed windows. Dee Tozer and her sister Susan brought material for dress and jacket this eve. Mr. Beck and Mr. Welton came to figure bathroom tile and plumbing. Beck quoted $500 to include 2 towel racks, soap dish, toilet paper holder, grab bar, and glass holder. He said he could start work in 3 weeks if union strike not settled; 3 months if it was.

Jerry didn’t go to work until 3 p.m. when he left for Waukegan for a hearing at 7:30 p.m. Worked on Betty’s blouse and shortened 2 skirts for Lucille Hurd, altered skirt for Katy England, and white linen dress for Mrs. Vogt. Mr. Hurd got Lucille’s dresses in late aft. and Mrs. Vogt and Katy got their things early aft. Mr. Beck and helper almost finished bathroom. He also filled in crack at doorway. Linda got check for $300 for me from my savings account to help pay for tile job.

Linda cut out Arlowyn’s white linen skirt while I worked on 2 zipper replacements in her multicolor shorts and lilac plaid pedal pushers. J&L went shopping at Zayre’s in aft. Jim Davis installed new toilet temporarily as it’s the wrong size (10" old one’s right size (12") after all so he will repair and use it. Richard and Joanne Satterfield (Joanne is Jerry’s cousin) here tonight to listen to Jerry’s tape recordings and see motions pictures [of their wedding reception]. Lois to hospital for stomach trouble.

L&M&J went out to Bartlett’s to give Mr. B. a fishing lantern for Father’s Day. Linda gave Jerry a key case and Mark gave him a tie pin (“B”).

J&L&M went to Howard’s to deliver Jimmy’s birthday gift. They took scales back to Sears, added $6.00 and got pink hamper.

M.E. and Bill here tonight and got “Infant Seat” Lorene had sent from Bressmer’s and a skirt I shortened. I hadn’t finished the other two until after they left. Mrs. Patton sent black skirt for slight alteration.

She brought a bottle of Avon “Occur” cologne and a floral arrangement for my birthday – very nice and thoughtful. I worked on Florence’s curtains.

Bert Clark came for fitting at 5:30 p.m. We left for dinner at M.E. and Bill’s around 6 p.m. Linda made angel food torte with strawberry filling and iced tea. M.E. had fried chicken, etc. They gave me a kitchen clock, L&J a pole mirror. Received cards from various friends. Jerry didn’t go to office; had Olds at Gillituk’s all day, then cut back yard. I worked on Florence Trede’s curtains and watched G.O.P. Convention in San Francisco on T-V.

Jerry brought Linda [from shopping trip in St. Louis ] 2 pr. panties, a pale blue bra, yellow waltz-length gown and robe, and white bedroom slippers. They went out to Bartlett’s tonight. Carol, Bob & children came after they left – brought material and pattern for duster. Ann VonBehren came over to tell me how nice our old mauve window and shower curtains look in her bathroom.

She left material for 2 bedjackets for her sister Mary and pair jeans for zipper replacement. Linda had hair appointment at 2 p.m. Christmas cards came from Dothla Card Co. I sold one box to Bill. They were here in eve. Linda and I made divinity and she served root beer floats. We watched Miss Universe contest – girl from Greece won.

She made “Broken Glass Torte” for dessert. Madeline Pettibone and Melfrances Underwood assisted. We ate inside on account of Chinese elm beetles and it was just as well because it was quite windy and cool. My secret pal gave me a belated birthday card and $5.00 – very acceptable and unexpected!

Worked on North girl’s coat. Rhonda got skirts and dress this afternoon. Linda made a German chocolate cake and helped me with divinity for bunco party to be here tonight. Linda won door prize – 3 ashtrays. Grandma’s house has been rented for 3 mos.

Worked on North coat and ripped Aletha’s red coat preparatory to making one for Maria. Linda took Mark down to beauty salon for Chris to see him. Jerry got a couple of wire brushes for scraping paint prior to painting house. Bill and M.E. here tonight – brought top layer of their wedding cake which had been stored in Chilton’s freezer. It was still delicious.

L&J went to State Fair at 6 p.m. to see Andy Williams Show – got home at 12:45 a.m. Finished North coat.

L&J&M went to Sunday School. M.E. and Bill here for dinner. Bill and Jerry painted on outside of house in aft. M.E. and Bill stayed for supper. Warren came this aft. M.E., Mark and Linda went to shopping center after he left. Frank Nelson here this eve. – gave me a “peck” on the left cheek -- I was sitting in easy chair near front door. Jerry and Bill went out to Quality Furniture Co. but didn’t buy anything.

Carol Pickering phoned in a.m. She and family arrived at Ron’s sister’s at 4:30 p.m. yesterday (Riddle Hill). Worked on Sharon Greening’s skirt. Mrs. North and her daughter came this aft. with some clothes to be altered. Linda and Mark went to Steinberg-Baum’s in a.m. Cousin Willis and Lorene came while they were gone – brought peck of apples from Spaulding Farm. Linda, Mark, Willene and Elizabeth went for a walk late afternoon.

Jerry went to Fairfield. Linda ironed today and took Mark to Gundy’s late aft. Finished Sharon Greening’s plaid skirt and she got it and brown corduroy skirt at 5:45 p.m. Barbara, Allen and Jimmy Howard here for a little while this eve. – she left a dress for zipper replacement. I ordered a pkg. of 3 corduroy pants and 3 flannel shirts from Alden’s and 3 suits and a Kiddie Kar from Penney’s for Mark.

Jerry went to East St. Louis. Ann brought some tomatoes and I gave her a pkg. of beef liver. Fixed Barb Howard’s dress and replaced zipper in Mrs. North’s skirt. J&L&M went to Chilton’s tonight – they gave them a box of tomatoes.

Jerry went to Waukegan. Carol, Ron, Stephanie and Polly Ann here around noon. They had a late breakfast so just drank coffee and ate cookies – left around 2 p.m. I invited them to dinner next Wednesday. Mr. Davis from Springfield Termite Control Co. here while they were here to make annual inspection. Betty Patton got shorts in a.m. Ann brought some tomatoes. Shortened one of Linda North’s skirts and altered another. M.E.’s last day at work.

Jerry in town today. Linda went to Bartlett’s to get 3 doz. eggs and picked up my order at Alden’s. Carol Chilton went to Memorial Hospital at 7:30 a.m. and Brian Keith was born at 9:45 this eve. – weighed 9 lbs. I worked on Linda North’s alterations.

Altered some of Linda North’s clothes. M.E. and Bill came around noon and had lunch and dinner here. Jerry worked until almost 1:00. He and Bill painted some on house exterior. They all went to Orpheum to see “The Moon Spinners” and then to the Georgian Restaurant for refreshments.

Bill and M.E. left around 5:30 p.m. Willene brought me a bowl of pumpkin souffle around noon. Judy [Jagow] asked Linda to bring Mark over this aft. so her mother could see him. J&L&M went out to Bartlett’s tonight.

She cut out Jennie Rodem’s dress today; I started working on it. I endorsed check covering antenna guy wire replacement and mailed it to Ira Huston; also sent check to Springfield TV Service for TV repair. Linda North got alterations.

Linda went to Bunco at Kay’s – she won 2nd prize – shoe bag with umbrella. Frances & Velma Jordan came with credit application card (Penney’s Catalog) for me to sign.

Nancy got the 2 skirts tonight. Carol, Ron and Stephanie here for dinner tonight – served ham, candied sweet potatoes, cranberry jelly, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls, apple pie with ice cream, coffee, and tea. M.E. and Bill came later.

M.E. and Bill here for supper. We had watermelon that Bill’s dad got in Beardstown and sliced turkey sandwiches.

Replaced zipper in Mrs. Rilling’s dress, resewed hems in Linda’s shorts, and sewed snap on her white knit dress. Mrs. Rilling got her dress late aft. Jerry went to East St. Louis. He and Linda took F-85 to garage tonight to have repairs made on account of backing into Varns’ car last Friday. Ordered coat, umbrella, jumper and blouse for Linda and 3 dresses for self from M-W.

Worked on Arlowyn’s jumper. Linda took Mark in stroller over to shopping center. She got a tablecloth (99 cents) and ironing board pad & cover (47 cents) for me (specials sold from 9:30-noon). Jerry went to North Aurora. Mark still has a cold. M.E. and Bill here for a little while. Uncle Hughes brought pkg. beef patties, one loin, and one of t-bone steaks. He took cans we left at street for garbage man. Garbage rate - 50 cents per month.

M.E. shampooed and set my hair. I altered Aletha’s skirt and dresses. Maxine Carr came tonight – left material for skirt, overblouse and blouse. Jerry took Mark to Fannie May’s and got some candy.

Aletha got her dresses and skirt at 5:30 p.m. J&L&M went to Bartlett’s to get eggs but none brought in.

Jerry picked up slacks I ordered for M.E.’s and Linda’s birthdays and Linda picked up order at Penney’s. They stayed home tonight – weather terrible.

M.E. got her tent dress in aft. that I shortened. Received 2 dresses from Warren, PA.

Jerry went to Quincy and came back about 1 p.m. for lunch. Linda and Mark went grocery shopping in a.m. Marge Wacaser solicited for Republican Club and I donated $1.00. Cousin Willis and Lorene here later with ½ bushel Golden Delicious apples. She took Linda’s skirts, etc. she wants to sell – Judy may be able to use them. I worked on Arlowyn’s dress and finished Mark’s 3rd flannel shirt.

Worked on Arlowyn’s dress. Jerry went to work at 9:30 a.m. Linda, Mark and I left at 10:40; went to M.E. & Bill’s; left Mark with M.E., and Bill went with us to Dr. Link’s office. Jerry got there at same time. He and Bill helped get me into dentist office. Jerry came back after to help Bill get me down steps and into car; we dropped Bill off and got Mark and came home. Linda had hair appointment at 2:30.

Linda and Mark went to Sunday School. I washed breakfast dishes, picked over green beans, put them on stove, made scalloped corn, peeled potatoes and made gravy. We had 11 lb. rolled rib roast and Linda made cheesecake with cherry sauce, jello salad, and mashed the potatoes as we had Mr. and Mrs. Bartlett, Mrs. Dodds, Kenny and Diane for dinner. Linda, Mark & I went for a ride around the lake later. The Searches were here tonight – brought sandwiches, chips, pickles and olives; Linda furnished jello salad, cheesecake and coffee.

Marie Stehman, Arlowyn Maddox and their mother came for Arlowyn’s dress fitting; also left material for dress for the mother, Arlowyn’s skirt to be altered, Marie’s knitted outfit for zipper, lining, etc., and 2 shirts of Walter’s for sleeve shortening. Linda went to bunco party tonight at Clara’s. Willene had surgery for tubal pregnancy.

Linda & Mark went grocery shopping in a.m. and picked up M.E. She shampooed and set my hair. I baked a pumpkin pie and gave her half. Linda took her home in aft., then went to Zayre’s and got an electric shoe polisher for Jerry and a car coat for she, Jerry and I to give M.E. for Christmas. Linda went to Dorothy Turner’s bridal shower at Washington Park Pavilion.

Mr. Carr brought Maxine’s buttons for suit in a.m. Linda had hair appointment in p.m. Telephone Company service man removed ringer box and only one number used now [?]. Jerry worked tonight. Linda got replacement mirror for me and bumper pad for Mark at Penney’s.

Bill dropped M.E. off here and he went to work. Caryl phoned and while we were talking, Bill came back for M.E. to take her to hospital. Baby girl born at 1 p.m. – 6 lb. 6 oz. – named Christina Lynn. How wonderful! Linda had hair appointment at 2 p.m. Mrs. Vogt got her dresses and skirt. I altered latter this a.m. Started shortening Dee Tozier’s coat. Bill here for supper – went to hospital tonight. My 2 dresses came from New Process Co. I ordered record cabinet from Alden’s for Linda for Xmas and bunting from M-W for Linda to give new niece.

Finished shortening Dee Tozier’s coat. Bill here for lunch. He went in his car to Dr. Link’s office at 2 p.m. Jerry came from work and met us there. Dr. crowned one tooth and filled 3 for $53.00. Bill went on to hospital. Jerry came back to help me get into car then went with us in Chevy while Linda took mirror back to Penney’s. He got off at Post Office and we came home about 5:00. I gave Kathy VonBehren $2.00 for taking care of Mark. L&M went to store later. Sent flowers to M.E. from Buckley’s, $4.00.

L&M went to Sunday School. Lorene came for me at 2 p.m., picked up Cousin Willis and Annie, and took us out to New Salem – got back about 5 p.m. A beautiful day and I really enjoyed the trip. Linda went to hospital to see M.E. and Christina. L&J went to a show tonight (“Send Me No Flowers” -- Rock Hudson and Doris Day) with Bob & Carol. Worked on Dorothy Pierce Roy’s things.

I finished Dorothy’s things. L&M went to Dougherty’s at 11:30 a.m. to be there when baby bed and diaper pail were delivered. They came back about 2 p.m. M.E. & Bill and Christina Lynn stopped this eve. on way home from hospital. The baby is a darling. Bill brought in flowers I sent and plant Lorene sent and as the box they were in was water-soaked, they fell through and the container I gave broke.

Left at 11:30 a.m. for Evelyn & Bill Wells’ in Sharpsburg – had a delicious dinner and nice visit with them. Came home at 5 p.m. Rained going and coming but sun came out early afternoon for awhile. Bill [Dougherty] came and he and Jerry went to get Jerry’s dad’s truck to pick up davenport and chair [from auction] tomorrow after work. I finished Kay’s coat and skirt, and altered Susan Brummett’s skirt.

Jerry and Bill got davenport and chair at auction barn after work and took it to Bill & M.E.’s house. Jerry took his dad’s truck home, then brought Linda’s car home. He worked tonight.

Bob here in a.m. Linda took Mark to Steinberg-Baum’s and then to Mary Ellen’s. Mrs. North got her dress after school and Mrs. Bartlett, Kay, Donna and Diane here tonight to get Kay’s coat and skirt. Joe Petschauer and wife here tonight – she’s from England. Jerry took Mark to Chilton’s to get Bob’s car to drive to Peoria tomorrow as he wants it serviced there.

Jerry took Mark over to get his hair cut.

M.E. phoned after taking Christina to doctor. She’s gained only 4 ounces so he’s changing the formula. Shortened Amy’s navy dress and altered 2 skirts for Nancy McCoy.

Received first Christmas card -- from George Bonn.

Willene, Tom and Elizabeth here for a few minutes around noon – left Christmas cards with picture of Elizabeth – darling! Jerry came home about 1 p.m. Frances Jordan came about 1:30 with 2 gifts from Louise Scott who was my secret pal. L&J&M went out to Chilton’s then to Bartletts. They were home this eve., had supper while watching TV. I also shortened Joyce’s plaid pleated skirt.

L&M went to Hughes’ around noon – Linda went to Town & Country Bank later, then cut out Olga’s dress for me. I marked pieces and started putting it together; also altered Shirley Emerson’s slacks. Bert Clark brought skirt to be shortened and material for dress after work. Wrote notes and addressed most of my Christmas cards. Jerry left about 7 p.m. for Waukegan as hearing starts at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

We watched “White Christmas” with Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney and Danny Kaye in color tonight. It was really good. Ray took girls to see it about 10 years ago.

Jerry got back at 12:30 p.m. Linda, Jerry and I made 2 batches of peanut brittle and Linda made one of toffee in p.m. They were going to Bastas’ this evening but Peggy isn’t feeling well and called it off.

Mark and Elizabeth exchanged gifts. He gave her a “Jack-in-the Box” and she gave him a box of soap figures – “Old King Cole” and “Fiddlers Three” by Stanley Products.

Olga got her outfit around noon. I wrapped all the caramels Linda made Monday. Mark’s cold was worse this eve. (temp. near 104) so Linda phoned doctor and he sent medicine out from Mummert’s. Jerry didn’t come home for supper – in court and waiting for jury to reach a verdict. Received ½ bushel Golden Delicious apples from Geraldine Spaulding.

Bob out in a.m. – gave him box of mixed homemade candy. Uncle Hughes stopped in and gave me a lovely Christmas card – will be back later. I made loaf of cranberry bread. Uncle Hughes came back in aft. with 2 pkgs. ground beef and 2 of liver and I gave him a box of candy. Malford Hanson brought a plate of cookies and a small fruitcake. Jagows brought over a box of cookies for Mark and 3 breakfast rolls for Linda, Jerry, and me.

M.E. and Bill came at 9 a.m. We had doughnuts and coffee then gift exchange. I received transistor radio from M.E. and Bill; pin, Mark; sweater and spray powder, J&L; bras and diary from Lorene; box of soap, Wes & Alice; jar soap, Pat & Lois; humidifier, Jim & Caryl and 3 miniature glass dogs from Pearce children. Left at 3:40 for Carroll Jones’, nice visit and delicious dinner – got home around 9 p.m.
